Twice this weekend alone (and a few other times recently) after I tell friends/family I am starting medical school in August they encourage me to be a "foot doctor". I then tell them that If I wanted to be a Podiatrist I would have had to go to podiatry school. Then they argue with me that I am wrong...

Out of all of the medical specialties out there why is it that so many people push for me to be a "foot doctor" and why don't they believe me when I tell them you cannot be a podiatrist if you graduate from medical school with an MD or DO?

(I know you guys can't actually answer these questions by the way, just thought it was interesting)

I agree, that is odd. Often it seems like most people don't even know what a podiatrist is, or they think of pediatricians.

LOL. That is odd, and very weird. When I tell most people I'm going into podiatry they are like "Why don't you go to a medical school and then specialize in podiatry?"

How about Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle surgeon.....u r considered a "foot doctor" and go to med school for that....but u obviously would not have the label of "Podiatrist".

But it is nice to hear a story that is the exact opposite from the norm of many pod students.

I explained this, they would have none of it haha.

wow this is really odd. lol does you family has a history of foot problems or is you neighbor a podiatrist driving some 100k car?:)

honestly this is exact opposite what i experienced when i said to my family that iam going to be a podiatrist. my uncle says "why dont you keep your options open till you graduate and then apply for podiatry during residency if you still like it:laugh:).

:smack: you should have gone to podiatry school...

Haha, people just don't get it. My grandpa thinks that podiatry is great, but insists that after a few years of podiatry that I should consider becoming a rheumatoid specialist. I tried to explain to him that it doesn't work that way, but he kept telling me that the average American will change careers 5-7 times throughout his or her life...

Haha, I get the same thing from my grandpa!
