I want an invite from RUSH

I'm pretty sure they are done offering interviews.

If anyone got an interview invite and have pretty much decided you are not going to attend Rush and are just going to check it out...feel free to decline the offer so that maybe the open interview slot can go to me! 😉

At the interview orientation they told us that they will continue to interview candidates for filling up their 2007 entering class (not for a waitlist, they do not interview candidates for the waitlist). For those of us that interviewed this week, we'll know our fate in about 5 to 6 weeks. During that time they will interview more candidates to fill up their entering class. Since they are on a rolling admissions setup, interviewing later has, virtually, no negative effect on your chances of admission to Rush. And apparently if you get an interview invite, your academic potential is no longer the issue, they want to know if you'll be a good fit for their school (or vice versa). Why is Rush so great? (just some reasons)

1. Location (in the illinois medical district...affiliated with 12 hospitals including the large cook county hospital, also, it is not in the downtown area...it's about 30 blocks away-thus the all the windows look out and the city, and it is not as congested...it is off of the blue and pink train lines and therefore there is great access to the city..or anywhere)

2. 95% of the student body is involved with RCSIP (rush community service initiative program)...they front load the clinical courses in the first quarter so that students can start building their clinical skills in one of the 7 affiliated free clinics (hands-on by January of the first year)....

3. the preceptorship also begins in January...shadowing a family practice physician

4. the school pays students ($17 per hour) to tutor the M1s and M2s ...help them out with the ins-and-outs of classes..etc

5. The Rush hospital has more ranked specialties than any other hospital...several specialties rank very high (ex: #8 in orthopedics)

6. they match well, score above average on national tests, great library and facilities...

7. the community at rush fosters a positive environment...not one of competition...thus, future physicians start learning to help and utilize information across specialites and interests...and can spend more time helping each other (which, in the end, is a better professional atmosphere)

8. the nursing school is one of the best in the nation and communication between doctors and nurses are fostered (again, creating a more positive atmosphere...which hopefully manifests later in the creation of a positive doctor/patient/nurse/hospital staff community )

9. there is a school sponsored research program which pays students to participate in a lab the summer after the M1 year (pays for a few weeks) in order to promote lab involvement (students can then continue in the lab)

10. classes are taught in either lecture, problem-based, or small classroom setting depending on the subject and the feedback from previous years...to allow the most effective style of teaching for each subject...therefore the curriculum is always under revision for improvement

11. Everyone is helping one another to become the best physician they can be in a supportive, highly intellectual, community service based atmophere...

12. alot of poeple stay at rush past school or return because they love it so much...

They are still interviewing to fill up their class. And it always helps to keep sending them updates on your ECs.

I was told by a source that I think is fairly reliable that they were done offering interviews. I hope I am wrong because I would really like to interview there.

I think the admissions staff encourages this if you are placed on the waitlist, so I'd hold off for the final decision.
 
I can't believe it... just received an interview invite from Rush!! First interview after having been complete since last October, in my home state no less. 😍

hey, i just got one as well... somewhat strange that it's being sent out on a sunday... i wonder how full their class is by now. any ideas?

i'll be interviewing on March 19th ... i was complete in late september
 
Just got an invite...will also be at the march 19th date. Complete mid November 🙂

Does anyone that recently got an invite mind sharing stats? I was told that I would have likely gotten an interview had I been counted as in state (I moved between submission of primary and secondar such that I met the requirements to claim IL for state of residency because I would have lived and worked here 1 yr before starting school). I was also told they were done sending out invites...but I guess not.

Good luck guys! It'll be a stress-free day with everything but the traffic working to your success! Know your AMCAS, your secondary, and any updates. Get a good breakfast, and they'll provide with you a good lunch. Cheers!

Some "hard" questions I have heard from friends have been:

Do you think you're mature enough for medicine?

Why Rush (as opposed to other Chicago area schools)? Why Chicago?

Why not some other health related career (i.e. nurse, social worker, genetic counselor, etc.)?

I know basics in healthcare and current events, which is always good. Read nytimes.com (I now swear by it). Hope this helps. Good luck!
 
Its really suprising to me that Rush's IT department is so whacked out... when I interviewed there, everything was smooth. They even had escorts (not sex workers) to take you from interview to interview etc. It really makes you scratch your head that they seem all over the place with the interview invites etc. I think the fact that they receive such large grants from the state of IL make their job difficult because they have to balance the number of applicants just right... otherwise they lose huge $$$. Last years class was 140 (should have been more like 120-130 max) because they miscalculated the number of people attending.

I think I missed this craziness since I didn't finish my secondary until December. Like everyone else has stated their interview setup was totally flawless. The environment, professionalism, and organization on interview day was great.

My interviews were very conversational. The first one we barely touched on "traditional" questions or my file at all. However, it is quite a mixed bag depending on the interviewer. Jill Porter gave us the low-down on some of our interviewers so you may want to ask her before yours. She was really down to earth during the intro session in the morning. The SDN interview question bank was helpful, bc its helped think about random questions you may get depending on your interviewers style. For example, I know one girl in my group who got "grilled" per say. For the most part though, I think they are conversational.

During my first job as a consultant, I did over 100 client interviews, and then started and led our campus recruitment efforts (it was a small new company). At my current job, I interview candidates to work on my team pretty much every week so I have some experience being on the other side of the interview process. Don't get me wrong. I was a little freaked before my Rush interview. Especially since I didn't know how close it would be in comparison to the interview environment I was used to. Afterwards, I saw how similar they are. The best advice I can give is smile, be friendly, enthusiastic, and as genuine as possible. Interviews are definitely used more to determine personality and fit into the culture. I can't tell you how many times I have seen well qualified people lose a position just over a frown or negative vibe they put out. Interviewers know you will be nervous. So they will not doc points if your answers are a little rambling, but don't translate your nerves into negativity. Most importantly, ask good questions!! Definitely think of 2-3 good questions that show your researched the school and have a genuine interest. Engaging questions can totally save you. That is the number one thing I look for, and I find is the easiest way to set people apart.

So after all of my own rambling 🙂 :
1.) Smile

3.) Have a general sense of what you can talk about in regards to some current heathcare issues. They don't expect you to present a thesis, so don't stress too much on this.
4.) Also, everyone asked "Why do you want to come to Rush" so if you want to think over one answer that would be my suggestion.

Hardest question I got: "Why do you think so many woman are becoming doctors nowadays?"
