I want to enroll in the fall of 2014

I will be taking the MCAT at the last date in August this summer so that I have the entire summer to study, following SN2ed's schedule.

However, I noticed the 2014 AMCAS application opens May 7th, '13. Is this really going to put me in a vice in terms of being a late applicant? I likely will not have my score until October, '13.

Any advice from someone who has been in this situation?

Yes, you will be a late applicant because people will have started getting their applications in since June. Based on your score, it will probably depend on how much it will hurt you. If you end up getting a 40+ it might end up hurting less than a 30 that you get back in October 😳

Guess I'll have to settle for a 40 then. 🙂 I can possibly broaden my school selection list to improve my chances as well I suppose.

I mean, there should be no reason I should start the SN2ed schedule right now and screw up my entire spring semester, right? 😛

There is no law saying you need to follow a specific schedule (like Sn2ed's). Unless you have an insane schedule for spring, it is perfectly reasonable to study while still in class. I actually don't know anyone who took a whole summer off to study for the MCAT.

I say either start studying now and aim for June, or take a gap year. Applying that late, unless you've got a 3.9+ and stellar ECs, is a terrible idea. Just my 2 cents.

I wouldn't. An August MCAT won't have scores released until September, which means that's when schools will be seeing your application... In September... 3+ months after almost everyone else has gotten and submitted secondaries.

I really did not want a gap year, and it's almost inevitable with that late of an entry.

I wanted to follow the Sn2ed schedule for its structure. If you think that's a good idea to begin tomorrow with my already purchased books and sign up for a June test date, then that is what I will do.

I am only taking 3 classes + labs in the spring, but perhaps if I start now I have 5 months to get through the material at a slower pace?

Let me know what you all think.

edit: I'm looking at aamc's site and it looks like the June 20th date might be a good option. Tentative score release by the 3rd week in July.

Do that, 3 classes with labs isn't bad unless their really difficult. If you have 5 months then go for it. I believe you can stretch the Sn2ed schedule to 4 months, maybe use that extra month as content review or just chill. No reason to take a gap year.

June 20 might be doable. I'd aim to get through content/passages by the end of finals and then use the remaining time to finish up passages and do some FLs.

Fwiw, I took 16 credits last fall and took the MCAT the following January and it went fine. Good luck!

The three classes are genetics, biochem, and microbio.

That sounds doable to me then Bauman. Thanks for the quick feedback everyone. I will keep my eye on the registration to open for that date as it is still TBD (lucky!).

Definitely try and take a May/June exam if you can possibly do that. That is the BEST option because you will have your scores before you send out your AMCAS to your schools. 5+ months is more than enough, I crammed in all of TBR in ~3 weeks. If you're motivated enough, I would try and maybe scale back the ECs and devote enough time to your MCAT. Otherwise, you don't want your handing in a late application to be the reason to reapply next cycle.

Yes, being complete in July is still relatively early, if your AMCAS is already verified and LORs are already in.

Yes, it will be considered relatively early. June 29th this year was the first day data was transmitted to adcoms, so your app won't be looked at until then. The queue on the other hand keeps building, so the earlier the better.
