Hello to everyone out there. I initially dropped out of college after my first semester due to personal family problems. It has been 4 years and my family seems to be quite stable again. My parents encouraged me to go back to school and I wasn't a bad student either. I enrolled in CUNY Baruch college and just about finished my first semester. It is a business oriented school and I'm working towards a degree in Computer Science and Information Systems. Im above a 3.5 gpa as of now. And I officially announced the pre-med track as my minor. So starting next semester including summers I will be taking all the pre reqs for medschool/mcats. I know the general requirements grades wise. But do you guys think I have a realistic of getting into medschool? Working retail 50 hours a week the past 4 years to support my family has really taught me the importance of education and what working hard for rewards means let it be money or recognition. I know how to work hard, and give it everything I got. Aprt from keeping the grades up, what else can I do? What can I do to make my chances of getting into medschool stronger? Any type of feedback is highly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Why not just go as a Bio/Chem major. I don't think Computer Information Systems is a profitable field. But, I don't think it really matters if you kill the mcat and have a high gpa. That being said, whats your cGPA and sGPA?

Side note: get rid of your picture.

Honestly, one of the main reasons would be my parents they personally don't think I should be doing medicine because I'm "22" to old to start. So they always just bicker against it. I on the other hand really want to go into medicine. my cGPA is 3.6, and my sGPA is a 3.8. But then again I have just started college so I do have a long way to go. The BIO and CHEM courses are relatively simple, but once i get into the Organic chem who knows how well I'll maintain my cGPA and sGPA. I enjoy science a lot along with my business courses.

You're fine then. Keep going and maintain that solid sGPA. Also your cGPA is fine, but try to bring that up around a 3.7. Kill the MCAT. and volunteer and you should be golden.

Thank you bro I really appreciate it. How far are you into the medical journey?

Last question, should we aim to take out MCATS junior year? If we want to go to medschool right after graduation?

Most people enter medical school when they are 24. That being said, sure. If you want to apply senior year, then you should aim to take it spring of your junior semester. And then apply your senior year. But in all reality, it doesn't matter when you apply.

Chances are fine if you keep up those grades. I'd imagine that working to support your family could be a strong point in your application.

Definitely not too old. I'll be 26 years young when I start med school and I've already met plenty of students in the mid-20's. We'll come out the other end of med school and residency in our mid-30's and still have a healthy 30-year career.

Take the MCAT spring of junior year then apply the following June. I'd recommend applying only when you have a satisfactory MCAT score.

Thank you very much I really appreciate the feedback.

Also have you guys heard about Baruch college? It a pretty good public business school in nyc. IDK if undergrad school really makes a big difference in application.

I just wanted to add that in addition to maintaining a good GPA and doing well on the MCAT, you should be exploring your interest in medicine through clinical experiences and demonstrating your desire to serve others through volunteer work. There are lots of threads here on SDN with advice as to how much time you should spend on volunteer work, clinical work, research (depending on where you'd like to go), leadership experiences, etc. Medical school admissions are interested in much more than just your statistics.

As for your question about whether or not your undergrad school makes a difference, SDN is full of differing opinions. You can read those threads too if you'd like, but ultimately it is very possible to get accepted to medical school from any accredited undergrad.

Good luck!

In case you didn't know, the grades from your first semester four years ago will also factor into your GPA, as you will send a transcript from any institution you've attended classes in. Just so you can prepare for that.

22 is not too old. I’m 32 and finishing up prereqs at Baruch this semester. I’ll be 33 when I start med school.
