hey guys,
i'm from Canada. I'm currently in pre-IB but soon must decide if i would be joining the actual program. I heard that IB is considered to be of same value to that of AP classes by undergraduate unis...regardless of the utterly increased amount of workload. Also, you can get many more options for full scholarships by getting a 90+ avg. in normal/Ap classes, whereas IB scholarships are minimal. Also, i believe Mc Master considers a minimum score of 36 for heath sciences for IB, i'm uncetain about the normal average but guessing it would be in 90's somewhere? Considering the combined workload, greater options for subjects, higher chances of marks &enternace in unis , etc. could you docs HONESTLY & SINCERELY tell me what would be the best choice : AP or IB??--like, leaving behind the usual "opposing" of the AP/Ib plz? 🙄 By the way, i'm conidering MacMaster & U of T. I know some of you will argue being too young to think about career and whatever but ya...i gotta know.

HEY,STAY AWAKE, I'M DONE!..almost 😀
& oh ya I really REALLY appreciate any constructive feedback & advice based on personal experience,
so ...thxx!! ( hope to hear a reply soon XD)

What the hell are you talking about?

I'm a Canadian and even I didn't understand that.

I don't fully understand your post, nor do I know how the educational system works in Canada, but can't you do both AP and IB? Thats what my school did...although pretty much all my courses were taught towards the IB test, for most classes I also took the AP exam. If I had to choose one though, I would go with the AP program. You get the same credit as you would for IB, and there's virtually no bs. For IB, I had to do all these bogus essays, oral assignments and projects that were an utter chore. This caused me to spend a lot more time doing school work in high school than I do now, and most of it was very low yield. But in Canada, maybe the IB degree is valued more... I would have no idea

Best of luck 🙂

No idea about Canada, but in the US, credit awarded for AP and IB courses varies highly from school to school. AP courses are more widely available, so there's plenty of opportunities for equivalencies, depending on the classes offered and your major. Also, last I took one, IB exams were out of 7 points (whereas AP exams are out of 5), so what do you mean by 36? (Edit: Nevermind! I forgot that they total those to determine if you're granted the diploma or not. It's been quite a while.)

Personally, I prefer IB's integrated curriculum (because if you get really good at BS now, you'd be amazed how easy term papers can be), but in terms of information conveyed, they're about equal.

Not all schools offer both. I had to chose my high school based on whether I wanted IB or AP - although I never looked into taking the AP test at the other school. I chose IB because I liked that the program is more "all or nothing" so it was sort of a school within a school and the program was small so you knew everyone. At my undergrad institution I got nothing for being IB because you had to have a 5+ in the higher level subjects and my only 5 was in a lower level. However, I definately felt prepared for college while many classmates struggled, so it wasn't a complete waste! Go for whichever one you'll enjoy most! 🙂

Edit: I should mention that I didn't go to school in Canada, just in case you needed/wanted to know that

hey guys,
i'm from Canada. I'm currently in pre-IB but soon must decide if i would be joining the actual program.

I have the IB diploma, so I am talking from experience. High school was much harder than college for me.

  • My HS classes were more detailed than my college science classes (Bio I/II, Physics I/II, Chem I/II).

  • The workload in college seems to be much less than what I have had in college. A lot of my fellow classmates suffered trying to adjust to the pace of college, but I had been used to it for four years.

  • All the Creative/Action/Service requirements are similar to what you'll be doing in college with your extracurriculars to round out your medical school application.
I thought IB was ridiculous when I was in the program, but I think it is the best preparation for college. I already hold a degree in a nonscience field and coming back to school to take science classes has been an easy transition because of my high school preparation. I still remember things I learned in 9th grade because of my school's intensity.

Although I don't regret going the IB route, I didn't have as much free time as some of my classmates. If I had to go back and pick, I'd do IB again. To be honest with you, I hold my IB diploma much higher than my college diploma just because of all the hard work I had to do to obtain it.

Lastly, if you're an IB student, you can take all the AP tests. If you're only taking AP classes, you can't take the IB tests.

PM me if you have more questions.

Alright, thanks a lot everyone for your input! ( even to certain people who had no clue "what the hell i was talking about" 😉 )
I'm gonna try my best to keep up with IB, since it seems to be such a good preparatory program.🙄
Thanks again & good luck with your studies too! :luck:

The other really nice thing about IB is that it approaches things from a liberal arts standpoint, forcing you to acquaint yourself with the humanities.👍

Good luck!👍
