What's so great about Harvard? Unless you're going into research/academic medicine, I don't see why it's so many peoples "greatest dream." I have heard people say that getting into Harvard med would be the highlight and best moment of their life. Sure, theres tons of prestige, but US MD anywhere confers the same career opportunities for private practice and, ultimately income, which is what is tangible and matters. Don't get me wrong...not trashing harvard in the least. I would go there instantly if accepted, I just don't see how its worth dying for or giving up something huge in one's life to get in, as some people (not necessarily in this thread) suggest. I wouldn't be that much more elated to get into harvard, than, say, SUNY Buffalo. Do other people feel similar to this sentiment, or the complete opposite?
I agree with you to some extent, but for me (and others I imagine) there is definitely an ego-driven desire to simply get accepted to the school that, in many people's eyes, has the best reputation in the world. Not saying that's even a major factor for choosing a school, but I think people that say it's not a factor at all kid themselves.
