If I shadow as part of my scribing job, what do I list this activity under?

I regularly shadow during my scribe job. It is a full time job that Ive had for about 3 months. How would I list the hours for this job? Should I try to split the hours and include some under shadowing and some under paid employment?

This is not true. Many schools specifically want ‘fly on the wall’ type shadowing where you are 100% not involved and simply observing the doctor/patient interaction.

I‘m sure you’re right but I doubt it’s “many”.

You just described a scribe.
So you are saying scribes do absolutely nothing and are not involved? Because that is not the case. Shadowing is a separate act of watching, observing and learning, not note taking and order making.

Scribing requires watching, observing, and learning............ it’s part of the job

Yes, you are correct. But you still have duties that are required of you as opposed to being 100% available for said watching.

I somewhat agree with MemeLord. It depends how involved you are with the patient/doctor relationship. I scribed for an OB-GYN doctor and I would sit outside the room at the computer and wait for him to come out and dictate everything to me as well as ordering all the tests, medications, etc. I wouldn't count this as shadowing.

Im a little confused as what shadowing vs scribing is. In my job, I thought the scribing part is inputting and organizing patient info. I often get called in to the patient room to help the physician and observe, I dont necessarily have to write anything down during this time, I mainly just hand things to the physician and help dress wounds. I thought this was shadowing? I work at a surgery center under a plastic surgeon who specializes in wound care.

I think you could make two sections on your application then. One for scribing and one for shadowing. You could describe the shadowing aspect while in the room with the patient and doctor and on the other section describe the scribing aspect through dictation, inputing of meds, etc. I would count this as both.

Oh ok that makes sense then.

When I shadowed in an ED I was glued to the doctor my entire shift.

Were you shadowing then you would not be helping with anything while in the room. You would be there, watching. Literally just watching. You would be the doctor’s “shadow.” Hence ‘shadowing.’

I would personally recommend you acquire additional shadowing (particularly in primary care). I would also suggest not listing this as shadowing as it is not - you are a paid employee with specific duties.

If you do want to go the route of listing it as shadowing then create two separate activities and split the hours, just ensure you do not mention that you were doing anything other than observing. Shadowing should not involve ANY patient care on your part.
