If I sign a contract, then receive a better offer (e.g. categorical vs prelim), can I get out of it?

I just need to know that if I sign a contract for a prelim spot, it won't mean I can't accept a categorical position than opens up.

Every contract includes a penalty clause for what happens if you breach the contract.
So if you sign it, and then go sign a contract somewhere else, you will incur whatever the penalty clause entails.

You think a categorical spot is going to open up between now and may/june? That is almost certainly not going to occur. If you sign the contract you are expected to complete the year.
