If inhalation is not a form of passive diffusion, than what is it?

Active. Think about it you are using energy to inhale the air forcing the gas into blood capillaries in lungs.

exhaling is passive.

a passive form of diffusion is something going from a high concentration to low concentration. i never really thought of breathing as diffusion but more so as a process that can either be active or passive.

yup..key points to remember...
Exhalation and Gas exchange are passive.
Inhalation are active.

hey I understand that inhalation is active b/c it takes energy to contract the diaphram for you to inhale. But at the alveloar level, the exchange of O2 for CO2, isn't that passive diffusion?

Gas exchange according to my notes (kaplan mcat) "occurs by diffusion across these capillary walls and those of the alveoli;" here's the concept why it's passive ..."gases move from regions of HIGER partial pressure to regions of LOWER partial pressure." in short passive 🙂
