If my SMP or master's program overlaps med school classes am I exempt from them?

If I did my masters in physiology, would I be exempt from the physiology class in med school? Would the classes even transfer over to med school (assuming that they can)?

I don't believe so. A med student or adcom could better answer this (I could be wrong) and it may vary to some degree by school but in my understanding even transfering courses between med schools is often not doable. Unfortunately, an SMP is basically a dead year AFAIK (necessary but not going to further your medical education).

We have a guy in our class that has a PhD in biochemistry, and he's still taking the biochemistry course with us, so I don't think so. Sorry 🙁

I think if you do the program at the same institution you attend med school they MIGHT. I think the gtown kids said they didn't have to retake their SMP classes (which they actually take with the med students) and someone interviewing with me at tulane was doing a pharm program there and said he wouldn't have to take pharm again if he went to tulane. You probably still have to maintain a full course load (take graduate classes or something). I could be wrong on all accounts though.

KTD's not wrong...Georgetown SMP kids do not have to take the same classes they already took if they get into Georgetown SOM, also they do have a lightened load but there's other stuff to keep them busy like the service/thesis requirement

Hope that helps!

Same with BU's MAMS program. If you go to BUSM, you've already got, what, like half your didactic coursework already done for the first year?!

Some accept those if you go to the same med-school.

this is true...

some schools (RFU for example maybe?) encourage their masters students to TA some of the classes...however I remember reading you don't get any reduction on tuition.

Why not take it again and ace it? Not sure how it works w/ reporting it on your transcript (if they show the grade or just show you have credit?) I know at my undergrad institution all they did was show we had transfer credit.

If you go to the same med school as your smp, you do not have to retake it. You might be doing reserch instead. If you go to a different school you will retake it but you will have a much easier time... SMP would prepare you very well for M1. But it doesn't really help you get into med schools(except at the school where you are doing the smp).

This is not correct. SMP programs exist to get people into med school. Most of them have a 70-90% med school placement rate, and the students go to schools all over the place.

Step 1 supposedly makes the MCAT look like a trip to the carnival. Having a firm grasp of the MS1 material (normal physiology) makes it much easier to understand and consequently remember MS2 material (pathophysiology and treatment). There is certainly no harm in retaking your SMP classes as an MS1.

The answer varies by school. No one in my med school gets out of any class, even if they are from our affiliated SMP. But I know of another school that allows the taking of placement tests for some courses and exemption if you get a passing grade. Personally, I'd have preferred to retake so the material would be fresher for the Step I.
