hey International... you "rock" man.... 👍 i wish there were more persons helping us like you , who had been on this road where we are now..i don`t know what is your stimulus to be here and to share all that info, but whatever it is - thank you man. i don`t have much Q for you, although, i believe a lot of people here are wondering when first letters of upenn regarding acceptance or rejection are to be expected.

Hi,
Thanx a lot for posting. And coming to the Upenn, they say they will announce on one fine day and the ones who gets a fedex post, means they got the admission. The ones who gets the snail mail are the ones either got rejected or in waiting list. But when i attended interview, i think after the first session, some people used to get the admission letters immediately, i e, with ina week or two. I really didnt understand their criterion of either the application review or the acceptance criterion. But what i can say is it is one among the best programs in eastcoast if u want to do Masters after the DDS.

Hi all,
I can give u all some information regarding the interview process in some of the schools for DDS. I can answer some of the questions as i had attended inteviews last year like you guys who r going to attend this time. Post any questions u have, and i will try to let you know as much as i can. U can ask me about most of the schools except, Upitt,UOP,CWRU and FLORIDA as i didnt attend these schools.

Hi,
In UCSF, u will have only one interview and it is also very planned and same questions for everyone to eliminate bias. And coming to the number of people, as far as they called around 130 students. So i think this year also they do the same..

All the best

International

Thanks Inter.. you are doing a great job.

But, didn't UCSF interview only 80 candidates?? I'm pretty sure that's what they told me last year. Last year (and years previous to last) they'll only invite 80 people, and after the interview they'll rank those 80 people in the order on which they'll offer admission. I don't think they have room, time or money for 130 students.

Not even UOP interviewed 130 last year, they barely made it to a 100. But this year I think they're cutting down on that number.

Thinks are getting tougher and tougher people, better work on those admission essays and those interview skills. Good luck everyone. :luck:

That's right for most schools. Fedex=good news. Snail mail=bad news.
If they need your answer fast they'll call you inmediatly too.

Hi,
I am sure than they called around 120-130 for the UCSF and i am not sure how many made it to that day. But i think it is around 100 minimum.

Hi UABDentist,
Thanx a lot for posting this message. I am trying to help you guys, cos last year at this momnet i was in these guys shoes going to all schools, and trying to get an admission and the help i took from SDN. It is a wonderful place where u can get some info, where u cant get it outside. I know that many people even dont me here and neither i am. So anyway, what kind of MS, u applied for. I know that getting some program is very had of u dont have a DDS except for some perio, Oral Med, Oral Rad, Dental Public Health.
I know that, people can join in to some propgrams i mentioned above. I am not sure any one can join in to Ortho, endo, OMFS, PEDO. I know that there is a lot of competetion among the regular DDS applicants for those, but u can try as i know one of my friend who joined in Endo and some in perio with out DDS. They are all too lucky to get in..

Anyway All the best

International

Yeah your right... there are a few programs who accept internationals without a DDS..at least thats what theyve mentioned on their websites.... I have applied to Ortho.. and waiting on their responses. I already got around 8-9 rejects outta the 18 I applied to ... and at one place Im on a standy by list for the interview process. I hope it works out there.
Its a tough nut to crack... but I have tried my level best.. so just have to wait and watch. I cant apply to DDS as I dont have enough $$$ for that. So mostly will be applying to GPR or AEGD... if I dont get into Ortho...or may be OD radio as I like that as well.
Well I am currently doing my MPH...so that will also add in as a degree when i finish it.
Well once again....its great to have you around.... and gud luck to you too.
God Bless..

I didn't get interview call from USC 🙁 ..I have Part 1 88 and a decent toefl score & good GPA and also some work experience..When I called they told that there are double the number of applicants this year +pissed+

Does it mean that I won't get interview calls from other California schools like UCSF, UOP, UCLA too? 🙁 🙁

Hi,
It doesnt mean that u wont get any calls from Cal schools. As everyone knows that every year there will be increase in competetion. So u wait and see as they willl send invitations some times in batches.

Thanks international for your encouraging words..At this point I am so frustated to know that I am not even in to the competetion..I really don't understand how I should improve my status ..When I asked them is it the part 1 scores, they said no they look in to everything...but I don't understand what they mean by everything..

Oh god, why is this field so competetive 😡

Hey international thanx for helping us...here is my story...i have got in BU, & have usc, ucsf and peen to go... I am planning to go for interview in USC & penn for sure...but i really have no idea about how good is the UCSF program...as i leave in east coast...

Hi,
Congratulations on ur admission at BU. Upenn, USC and UCSF are also good programs. In my consideration UCSF and Upenn stands at one level and USC is the next and BU is next if u dont mind spending more money. But what i would like to say is, If u think u need to do for a lesser money, i think BU is the best cos it is cheaper than the rest i suppose. But the probleam with the BU is u need to sit in Pre clinials for around 8-9 months which i dont want to do cos i think i am confident in them. When u come to Upenn, it is one of the best school in USA and if u would like to go for Masters, i will sincerely suggest to join there. But the problem with that is, u need to pay for the summer from ur pocket and summer is little hectic in work and Winter is chillingggggggggggggg. Coming to USC, it has PBL, some people liked it and some didnt like it. It is also a good program, cos one trimister u will be doing pre clinicals and then will be starting Clinicals and not like BU. They have a very busy summer and u need to work hard too. Coming to UCSF, it is one of the best program in my sense in USA as they recently adopted Pass/ No pass system, where passing is not at all difficult as per my understanding. What i heard is , they have the coolest summer program among all and it is fun being with UCSF. And if u want to consider masters, UCSF is one of the best choice along with Upenn as UCSF does the most research in USA and one of the world renowed university for the health care education especially, Medicine. So, my first choise as per my understanding is
1. UCSF/ UPENN
2. USC
3. BU
But if u really think of getting "just just DDS" with a less loan, i would sincerely suggest you to go to BU as per the last years fee schedule.
I think u understood what i mean and criterion of choosing the school.

All the best and i hope i didnt confuse you......

Interntional.

QUOTE=international]Hi,
First off all i would like to say, u r nick is good. And coming to
1. I just answered in my previous post.
2. Regariding the instruments, except USC, every school provides the necessary instruments, so u dont need to worry about it if u r not going to attend USC.
Coming to the preparations:

Loma Linda: 1. Preparing a molar either upper or lower with clay.
2. Making a cube of 4 cm using sticks and sticky wax.
3. Engraving alphabets on plaster of paris cube, with specific dimensions. I mean width and height of the alphabet. Or They might ask u to prepapre a pyramid from a block with certain dimensions.
4. Carving or drawing a flower imprint on a clear acrylic plate using a chisel. This is the most toughest for me. hahahhahahaha

UCSF: 1 . One crown preparation, i dont remeber exactly, but i think it is anterior.
2. Two class 2 preparations, one should be restored with amalgam and one with out restorations. I think we got lower premolar.

UCLA: These guys ask a lot
1. I think 2 class 2 preps with one restoration.,
2. One crown preparation.
3. Bonus: Either Mod Onlay or some thing like that. This they ask u to do if u have time and if u do, u get some bonus points and i dont think no one will leave that.

UOP: No idea.
USC: I think USC does ask the same preps, but i cant help on this. I think some one else might help you.

CWRU: As far as i know, they have teeth setup along with the others.
so get ready to set some teeth if u r apperaing for CWRU.

3 Interviews:

Loma Linda: It will be for around 30 minutes with 5 people sitting in one room and asking u questions one by one. I think they ask questions from their respective departments. They ak general questions, but some times they might grill u on clinicals, if they think u r smart. But it will be funnn

UCSF: U will be interviewed by 2 people and they have the same questionaire for everyone to eliminate bias. Once u tell them u r response, they will be writing down in front of you in your own words like the CHIEF COMPLAINT in the case history. hahahhaha

UCLA: u will be interviewd by 3 people asking some general questions.

The common questions every one can expect are

1. Why Dentistry?
2. Why they should select you among all the applicants?
3. What are your positive and negative points in you both profesionally and personally.
4. What is the most happiest moment in ur dental career.
5. Would like to go back to your country after u graduate from this program.
6. Do you know any one in this school?
7. Where u see ur self after 10 years.
8. what would u like to do after graduating with DDS.

..................................

These are the ones i remember as i have a poor memory 😕 😕 😕

So all the best to you all and post if u need any info.

Hi,
I have a doubt .If u get an admission into any of the colleges will you be completing your required 2 years ( 3 and 4th) along with all the other students, like same classes ,same course work or will it be a totally different curriculum.I hope you got what I am asking.Do they form us into a separate group or are we to blend into the normal 3rd year class? Was just wondering 🙂 coz Boston seems to have a totally different courses for their 3rd year and the advanced standing program.

Hi neha,
As far as i know, every school has some kind of different criterion for their international program. Eventhough they merge u with the regular batch, u will have different requirements as u enter directly in to third year where as others are in regular program.

I think this is what u want.,

Hi,
If you get an interview call from NYU, it will be good and i wish you all the best. But i think they cant consider ur applicantion until they get ur Toefl scores. And coming to the other interviews, i think most of the dead lines got over and i think u need to apply for the year of 2006. But i suugest you to improve ur score as u will not be competing with other nationalities as u only comptete with Indians and u know their scores too. I am not being different, but it is the story behind getting in to DDS.

Hi,
I think u need to search old thread, regarding how to prepare for NDBE part 1 and what books u need. Some thread are fabtastic and i sincerely suggest everyone who is taking part one or two should go thru them to get an overall view. Coming to the TOefl, i suggest to have 260 as one univeristy requires you to have 260 in toefl, so if u have 260, u dont need to think about it. And coming to the materials for NDBE, i think u can buy from some one who is willing to sell. There will be some posts or u also can post a request regardin it. I would suggest to read KAPLAN, DECKS, PREVIOUS PAPERS.

Hi,
As you all know that every year competetion increases. So i thik everyone needs a good score to get in to any school. And i dont think MPH will be of much use except for experience in the US system and they do consider it. But i am not sure how much weight it carries. And coming to the Experience, they really appreciate if anyone has dental experience. I dont know whether i answered ur question or not.

hi,
once again good work and keep it up.

i have got interview calls from penn, bu , ucsf, usc and ucla.
I have already attended the ones in penn and Bu.My penn interview was terrible and i am pretty sure that i wont get the fed ex package.

the one in BU was pretty good, but i was just wondering what criteria they take into consideration before accepting you?

Also i would like to get some information about usc and ucla.Is there a written exam.My UCLA interview is on the 9th and 10th.Was just wondering what the clinical exam is like? Do they tell you exactly what kind of preperation they want.I know that in UOP they give u a tooth and you have to mimic the exact same thing. Is it like that in usc ,ucsf and ucla too?Do i need to r ead anything for the pre-clinical exam.

Considering the amount of money and effort that is going into this.I do hope and pray that i get in somewhere.UCLA has asked for a 300$ for the pre-clinicals that is non-refundable!!!!!!!!!!

thanks a lot

Hi,
I think posted regarding this in some thread regarding what they ask in UCLA and UCSF. I dont have any idea in USC. And paying $300 in UCLA, is common as i paid last year.

I must say you are doing grrr888 job..

I read you posted reply regarding applying to a MS program without completing DDS first. I want to apply to a MS program. My part 1 score is 94, TOEFL score is 263, GPA is 3.82. I am preparing for Part 2 and GRE. I want to get into a good clinical speciality program. I was persuing my masters in Endo( back home in India) but due to some personal reasons i had to quit the program. So I want to know that What are the chances of getting into a good clinical speciality program like PEDO or ENDO? Can you suggest me some schools where it will be easy to get into a clinical speciality program and criterial of selection as you mentioned that some of your friends got into MS without DDS..

I will appreciate your help.

At last, I found someone who is applying for MS and not for DDS.

You can really really help me and guide me.
My part 1 score is 94, GPA is 3.82, TOEFL score is 263 and i am preparing for Part 2 and GRE.
Can you tell me the criteria of selection for MS program(without DDS)

It would be a great help if you can send me the list of univerlsities where you applied and of course the specialities for which you applied.

It would be a great help if you can share your experiences at BU and UPenn as I have also applied and waiting for interview call to come......

What was terrible about UPenn interview????

Hi international. I was very impressed with your manner and response as others.
Thank you for your help.

International, I have a question.

Do you remember exactly who interviewed you last year in UCLA and UCSF?
I wonder if there is a key person like Dr.Lopez of Penn in UCLA and UCSF.

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Hi,
As far as i remember i was interviewd by 3 people in UCLA and one among them is the director i suppose and in UCSF, some faculty will be interviewing you. But the bottom line, is u should grab their attesntion and make them sure that u r the person they r looking for. So, i feel everything is in ur hands, and it all depends how u mold it.

Hi,
i think u have a good scores and if u get same kind of score in part two too, u will be fine i suppose. The thing is getting in to ENDO,ORTHO,OMFS, is not that easy. I am not sure about pedo, but i think it is equally competetive. So, in my sense, getting perio is very easy among the rest and it has a very good future too cos the incoming baby boomers. I would suggest you, to do and work voluntarily in some good univerisity and do some research so that it will be helpful in getting into specialty. So if i am in ur shoes and would like to endo or ortho, i will do some work at a good scool. But still, it is not that easy either cos there is a lot of money in those fileds and more over lot of DDS applicants for them.

Thanks for guiding me.
I will try my level best to get good score in part 2 and GRE as well.
And of course, regarding some voluntary research work, i will try to figure out something..
Thanks again.

This is a link to the thread where a few things about MS in US are mentioned.. you can check it out.
I was under the impression that one can practice in US after doing ONLY MS... sadly like i have mentioned in that thread... it is not entirely true. You have to do a DDS if u wish to practice.
After MS ..only a few states, 7 to be precise give licensure directly without DDS, however, it is only in case of a shortage or incase you're going to be working in a Hispanic area or a University...etc. Its a chance you would be taking.
And let me tell you this... MS seems very cool. but it is very very difficult to get into.... You would be competing with DDS's and some who also have GPRs ..or a few yrs of private practice... This applies to any field in MS... Nothing is easy. I applied to 18 schools for Ortho, have heard from 15 👎 at one place i am waitlisted for the "interview"...i doubt i will hear from them.. and 2 more are yet to declare...
Your scores are gr8. no doubt. but like International says..... you shud try and get into some kinda research experience "related to Dentistry" ofcourse...
and better still if it is in your MS field...

Hope this helps... I'd be glad to help if you need anything else..
Gud Luck! Study hard...

Hi buddy,
great job and taking out time for others is a blessed quality.

I too have a question.I heard many people saying that once called for interveiws, scores will not matter and what all matters is interveiw and practical performence.
Is it true? Please let me know if anything more will help too.

thanks in advance.

TOEFL 247
gpa 3.53
i know my scores r nor good and on the top of that i have just applied last week in NYU, upenn and nova...so late huh...shd i keep some hope or shd i forget everything and start preparing to retake toefl and P1 ? please help..dont know what to do..do i have any chance in any univ?
Hi,
I think u do have a chance to get in to programs like others, but u need to do better in other aspects, i mean either in interview or in the practicals. I think ur application might not be too late, but if some thing goes wrong, u better take the part one again and make sure that u get around 90-95 atleast for the next year. I am seeing the competetion from last 2 years and i see a tremendowun increase in the scores of the people. So u need to stand along with them. I wish you all the best this year and i think u will be fine as i know a lot of my friends less than ur scores got in to many programs in USA.

Hi,
The questions u asked me is a wonderful question. When i was in ur shoes people told me that, every one will be same once u get the interview call. BUT IT IS NOT. After the interview, they will consider each and everything of ur application and comes to a decision. So even i used to believe and think in that way , but i know it is not.
I am being frank, and it might be a little dissapointing to some and encouraging to some.
