...is there any national chapter you can join? A professor said it was really important to be phi beta kappa and that he'd try to get me into the national chapter or something, but I didn't think that existed.

You can get into med school and not be in PBK -- I don't know that many people who are PBK. As far as I know, there is no "national chapter." It is only associated through schools with chapters, and establishing a chapter is a long and expensive process. www.pbk.org

is that some kind of pre-med club? 2 of my freinds are in med school adn neither of them have heard of this club. so dont worry you too can get in without it. but i guess it couldnt hurt!

Let me tell you a story.

Last year, at every school I interviewed, they plainly told me that it was my lack of PBK membership that would lead to my rejection, my 4.01 and 46 MCAT notwithstanding. Get in to phi beta kappa if it's the last thing you do!!!!! 😱

how did you get a 4.01 did you have some AP classes of something? or is that a typo?

He got it the same way he got 46/45 on the MCAT...👍

No, people in PBK get to take a special MCAT that has a secret extra credit section worth up to 10 points. I think the 4.01 was a typo.

you to be elected into Phi Beta Kappa. Then the faculty members at your school who are members of Phi Beta Kappa elect approximately 10 percent of the seniors and 1 percent of the juniors into Phi Beta Kappa membership. Only colleges and universities who satisfy Phi Beta Kappa's standards are permitted to have a Phi Beta Chapter. Most schools do not have Phi Beta Kappa chapters because they don't meet the standards. There is a very comprehensive review process that includes onsite evaluation before a school is allowed to have a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. That is the story.

Searun (yeah, I do belong to Phi Beta Kappa)

He gave the proctor the secret handshake before the test. I think I've said too much. :scared:

You certainly do not need to be a member of Phi Beta Kappa to be admitted to medical school. I am sure that the majority of students admitted to medical school are not members of Phi Beta Kappa. That said, I do think that it is a significant recognition of academic performance - because you are admitted by the vote of the faculty at an undergraduate institution that meets Phi Beta Kappa's high standards for qualifying for a chapter. Phi Beta Kappa was established in 1776 at William and Mary during the revolutionary war. I think that either Harvard or Yale had the second chapter. The school that I attended estabished its Phi Beta Kappa chapter in 1912, as I recall. It is recognition of academic success in a broad liberal arts program - you have to excel in math, science, literature, foreign languages, etc. You can't just be a premed science geek/nerd. At my school the minimun gpa was 3.8 cumulative in the senior year. So, yeah, I am glad that I am a member of Phi Beta Kappa. It won't get me admitted to medical school but it probably will help in some cases.

can anyone comment on phi kappa phi? i got something from them the other day and thought i had heard of it, but is it on the level of PBK (ie worth joining)?

My school does't have a phi beta kappa chapter...

O NOES!!! :scared:

PBK, like any other honor society in undergrad, doesn't mean anything unless you are active in it.

Seriously, don't worry about it. I know of 1 or 2 other people who were in it in my class. When I got in, I had never even heard of it -- which I've found is a common occurrence, and when I spoke with professors at my undergrad, they said a similar thing, that many students didn't even know what it was. If I hadn't been studying abroad, and my dad hadn't been taking care of my mail, I wouldn't have joined. My sister got into USC med school without being in it.

I was being sarcastic but thanks for the assurance. 🙂

Just curious... What is there to be active in? University of Arizona didn't do anything with theirs.

Do something with the other members, like do volunteer work or organize a charity event for example.

Of course you have to rely on your father to explain it to you. It was founded in 1776 and nobody knows the significance of that date either because people of our age have no understanding of the signifcance of history because we are the MTV generation...what a bunch of ignorant losers. Can you look at a map of the world and find India? God, how exasperating! Do you know who Ghandi is? Ask your father. Hopefully he knows and can explain it to you. Please get a real education.

Consider yourself lucky. If you are in it, I wouldn't put it on AMCAS. It makes you look like a tool's tool.

At my school, you just signed some form that they sent to all the science majors and you were in! Easy as that. Instant resume padder. Oddly enough, despite the level of ease, still very few people were actually in PBK.

between Ghandi and British Empire. In your head. Without looking anything up? No clue....neither does the guy from MIT who never met a math equation that he did not love.

I'm sorry that I went through undergrad quite oblivious to PBK until I got elected into it. At the point, I promptly went and researched it and learned the history of it. It was obviously not my goal to get elected into it when I started college; it was just a benefit of having a science major (and minor) and two language minors. Now that I'm in medical school, I'm considering that my "real education."

if that makes you proud, then be proud, and make sure you have the So Cal Paris Hilton tan. It is all about looking good! Yeah, I still like that bald guy from India.

er, it's actually quite the prestigious honor society. it's not the National Dean's List.

I joined PBK last year; however, the organization never sent me anything, not even a stupid certificate 😎

I got the initial materials through my undergrad. You have to buy the certificate separtely. You can log into the website throught the materials you get mailed, eg. The Key Reporter, has your ID number.

Searun, I don't know what I did to offend you. I stated honestly what occurred 3.5 years ago when I was elected into PBK. Also, there is a general lack of knowledge among students as to what PBK is; the Key Reporter had an article about that when I was newly elected. Sure, some people will always know about it, but in college, I was concerned with taking my classes and doing well. As for being ignorant, I have already admitted I didn't know about PBK. However, I am not generally considered an ignorant person. While I have not been as forturnate, as some in my family, to travel to India; I do know who Gandhi is. Your assumption that I couldn't find India on a map sounds very European thinking that most Americans don't like to leave and haven't the US.

First, if you really are married to a hot woman, as you claim, why do you spend so much time on this forum, instead of taking care of your wife like man with normal hormones would.

Second, if you really are a medical student, why aren't you studying medicine instead of spending hours evey day on this forum. I know a couple of medical school students and they are much too busy to haunt this internet site.

The inevitable conclusion...no wife, no medical school. Just another premed nerd with too much time on his hands and no social life.

Hours every day here? I'm flattered you think I spend that much time carefully crafting my 5 posts per day, but really, it's nothing. If med students are too busy to post here, why is Ashers posting?

And I appreciate your concern, but I had sex an hour ago. She's asleep now.

id never heard of pi beta before sdn. sounds like an elitist money maker to me?

Med students definitely have time to post here. Especially during study breaks. If they didn't, the Allopathic Forum wouldn't exist.

And thanks, Prowler... we really needed to know that last part. 😉

high school class, who graduates, reluctantly, and then spends every friday night lurking around the high school football and basketball games. It is just somewhat odd, but if that is how you get your kicks, who am I to judge. When I am in medical school next year, I will be long gone from this forum. I guess I just like to play with people my own age/experience. So I ask myself, why would a real medical student log onto this site multiple times each day, to engage people who aren't medical students. It just strikes me as peculiar way to spend your time. Nothing wrong with it, it just seems strange. I hope that I have more productive ways to utilize my time next year rather than bashing people who are trying to get into medical school. Oh well, get your kicks on Route 66.

Sorry no. If you don't have a phi beta kappa at your school you cannot go to med school. Best to drop out now and restart at a better undergrad.

Or alternatively, I suspect you can buy a key on ebay and just tell everyone you were phi beta kappa.

I am 6'2", 185 lbs. A weight lifter. 2 sport NCAA athlete, 4 year starter in both sports, captain of my college soccer team. Member of a college athletic team that won a national championship. Numerous all-conference athletic awards. First team academic All-American. I played sweeper for 4 years on my college soccer team - and as the leader of my team's defense, my primary responsibility was to physically punish the opposing team's forwards and midfielders who encroached on my team's keeper with the ball at their feet. I specialized in the clean but brutal slide tackle. So if I stepped on an athletic field with TauPathology or the Prowler, or met these guys in a bar, I think that it would be readily apparent which one of us is the alpha male. There will be no further comments by me on this subject on this forum and soon I shall go gentle into that good night.

LOL -- people tend to gain a few inches and a couple dozen lbs when posting from the safety of their living rooms. Based on your post I'm thinking 5' and spindley, not athletic, probably thick glasses and hardly an alpha male. Folks with nothing to prove tend not to post the above kind of post. (And FWIW 185 is way too low a weight for a weightlifting physically punishing athletic male over 6'. At 6'2" that is either rail thin or zero muscle tone). Sorry to burst your bubble but this was just too funny.

I am not threatened. I am trained to the level of black belt in six forms of martial arts. I can bench press 700 pounds. I run marathons for warmup. I play in several major league sports. I speak 8 languages (including Klingon). I know pi to a thousand places.

Hold on, my mom's calling me to come upstairs. brb
