If you're a current OOS vet student...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Went to the cheapest OOS school I got into.

And this OOS school happens to have a lower total COA than my IS (Tuition slightly higher, living expenses much lower).

The difference in cost between IS/OOS tuition for my IS school is only $3k... 🙁
When I went for my interview they told me that number was going to be 0.

How did you justify the cost?

I am not a current vet student, but I have pulled my app from my instate to attend an OOS school- Mizzou.. My justification is that you can get IS residency at Mizzou after the first year. Also, the cost of living in Columbia-(Mizzou) is cheaper than Knoxville (UTK). It will end up being about the same cost for me. With that in mind I did a TON of research into both schools curriculums / student orgs / location and knew Mizzou was the place for me!!

Good luck on your decision!!

Haven't made a choice yet, but even if I'm admitted into my IS (Texas A&M) I'm certainly considering going out of state. Why, and how would I justify the cost?

I really, really like KSU. Considering everything without cost, I would say it's probably my favorite. And while I like A&M, I've been here for my undergrad and spent plenty of time in the vet school for classes; hell, I feel like I've just been in Texas too long. I've been itching for a change of scenery for a while, and this would be an opportunity to do so.

And though I'll need to do the math and figure out exactly what's what; I'm pretty well set money wise, and should be able to make it pretty far in school before I need to take out loans. If someone has no choice, then do what you must, but otherwise if you can help it I don't think it's worth choosing to go OOS if it will mean burying yourself in debt. If you can afford it though, and the school you definitely want is OOS, then go for it.

I'm OOS at Michigan State (tuition= ~$230,000). I didn't even apply to my IS, VMRCVM (tuition ~$100,000, comparable cost of living). Justification- I'm crazy and so are my parents because they are paying for it. 🙂 Don't do what I'm doing unless your parents are helping or you have the monetary funds saved up to go OOS.

But really, MSU is my alma mater and I could not see myself anywhere else. I loved the school since day one. I feel like MSU will make me the best vet I can be through the various opportunities and support it provides.

getting into my IS (VMRCVM) was going to take a substantial amount of re-work on my part (either a masters or adding additional post-bacc classes)

SGU was cheaper overall than all of the OOS schools I liked/had a good shot of getting into

the idea of being in a foreign country and getting that experience in addition became extremely appealing during my application process, and SGU felt like an excellent fit. so far i've been right!

Decided when I applied that I would go to whatever school I applied to that would take me, rather than waiting another year and having to apply again. Fortunately, I was accepted to a school whose OOS tuition is actually lower than my IS school, so I'm not fretting about it too much (well, aside from the general horror at the amount of loans I have taken out...and I'm not even done yet :scared:). I did have options, and my other two options were other OOS schools that were more expensive. The reason I picked WI wasn't the money (although that was a huge benefit) - it had to do with the program, the vibes I got when I visited schools, the geographical area and a whole host of other factors that made it the best fit for me.

If you can't justify it for yourself, don't apply to any OOS schools.

Welsh are you thinking of going OOS if you get into FL?

I'm really interested in Food and large animal and K-State is known for their beef industry knowledge. If I get into Florida that's most likely where I'll end up as I have debt from my masters.

I am also very interested in Feline medicine despite that being on the completely opposite side of the spectrum and cat nip and UF would allow me to explore that much further then K-State.

I was accepted to K-State last year and in the end couldn't justify the cost. I didn't have another acceptance to fall back on (just a wait list) and I realize that's not an option for everyone. With my "IS" schools in Canada at $10k/yr, I was willing to decline and roll the dice this year. I think the best way to think about it is if the benefits of going to the OOS school are worth the extra $80k (or whatever the difference is for you) and what you could use that money for. That being said, I hope you make it into whichever school you would be happiest with. 🙂

Oh wow I admire your tenacity and maturity to turn down that offer.

Just hoping it doesn't bite me this year. 😉 There are bad days where I wish I had just taken the plunge and turned a blind eye to finances for four years. But in the end, your future is important and you need to do whatever you can to make sure you're helping yourself be as successful as possible once graduating. A mountain of debt is crippling, but obviously there is not always a choice.

:xf: :xf: that you get great news this year!!

Wow, I am glad to read of your gutsy decision. Best of luck this year!

I've been thinking about that a lot... as my IS is very cheap and has low COL, I'll be looking at a $110-130K difference going OOS. I am someone who is not of great means- while my family is emotionally behind me 100%, I have no outside financial support. I also have no substantial savings and moderate undergraduate debt from two Bachelor's. What I will do if I get only OOS offers has been on my mind a lot! That $110K is definitely more than a year in lost wages, and I can get a lab tech job in the mean time and either pay down my UG debt or save up a nest egg to live off of.... but if that dice roll didn't work out for me next year, I'm not sure I'd ever forgive myself. Plus I'm old already.

I am really leaning towards going towards OOS (ohio state) even if I get into my in-state (NCSU). i really liked the campus...and i have to admit it, the fact that they seem to really want me makes me feel warm and fuzzy (didn't apply there last year, rejected from NCSU out of hand last year). For the finance part...according to the residency office, as long as my husband has full time employment by the day classes start first year, i'll have residency all four years (so not too too much more expensive than my IS). not lastly, i am lucky to have parents willing to pay off my debt wherever I go, within reason (they would expect me to go to a school that was $100,000 over 4 years if the other option was $300,000 over 4 years).

Oh and there's always this option... 😛
http://www.seekingarrangement.com/

Apparently a surprising amount of local students are doing this in my area. Kind of unsettling that it made the newspaper. Do what you gotta do I guess?

 Maybe... There is also finding some resident person to have an arranged marriage with (somehow that seems less creepy to me?). I know for several states that does the trick.

Possibly less creepy, but more permanent 😛 But a definite possibility.

And thanks FrozenShades! 🙂
