I've been accepted to veterinary school at VA-MD, however, now I don't really know what to do. I've found a place in Blacksburg but I don't know when or how to get started on acquiring loans or if there's anything else I should be doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I know that they'll be sending out a URL to the new student webpage by April 30, after you send in your acceptance letter. The letter that they sent us also has a URL for financial aid, and where to go to fill out the FAFSA.

How did you find housing? Any tips?

The best way to find housing is to ask around esp. vet. students. I really don't know where, but I think, I'm going to end up buying a house. But really, I think the best way is just to wait until we get that URL. We have time, no reason to panic yet. 😀

FAFSAs are due MArch 11th "for maximum benefits" I believe - All our financial stuff goes through Tech itself:

Checklist for Correct FAFSA Processing
FAFSA on the Web - Preferred Method

Read the information on the Office of University Scholarships and Financial Aid (USFA) web site and understand that if the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is completed after March 11 you will receive a lower priority consideration for many grants, need based low interest rate loans, and work study.

Go to FAFSA on the Web, read the FAFSA instructions and complete ALL items on the application using a "0" for items that were not applicable.
Make certain that your Social Security Number as entered is CORRECT. If it is incorrectly entered, your Student Aid Report (SAR) will have a reject code and your application for aid will be rejected. You will need to re-file a new FAFSA.

List Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University's school code 003754 in Step 6, Item #97a.
Enter the appropriate housing code in Step 6, FAFSA Item #97b.
Complete asset items 43-45 in Step 2, and 87-89 in Step 4.
Use your PIN (and your parents should use their PIN if you are dependent) to electronically sign the FAFSA application. You may also print, complete and mail the Signature Page to the Federal Processor within 10 days of submitting your FAFSA. Be aware that mailing in a signature page will slow down the processing of your application.
Include your email and physical mailing address.
After you complete the FAFSA online, print the Confirmation page to verify that the Federal Processor received the FAFSA.
Understand that if you use estimated tax information for either you or your parents on the FAFSA, you will need to make on-line corrections if information changes after your parents or you complete your tax returns. There may be delays, and further information may be requested by our office. While actual tax return information is preferred, due to deadline dates, estimated tax information is acceptable. Do not submit actual tax returns to Virginia Tech unless requested to do so.

Here is a huge listing of all the apartment complexes in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, etc. Happy hunting!

Like bear90 said, there should also be a timeline posted on the vetmed website for new acceptees...the address should eventually be emailed to you - info about rabies vaccination, orientation, all of that goodness.

Come to Open House!! 🙂

Does anyone know the answer to the following question: If you listed your parents information on the FAFSA (to see if you'd qualify for HPSL), does the EFC the Dept of Ed sends back to you reflect their financial information, too? Or is that number based solely on your information as an independent graduate student? Thanks.

If you listed yourself as independent, I am 99% sure they do not take into account your parent's data. If you listed yourself as a dependent, or if they are contributing to yuor education, I think it will be looked at.....don't quote me on it though, not totally sure. I certainly didn't out my parent's info on, cause they are retired/quite well-off and I am a poor schmuck!! 😉

Edit: Ohhh I thought you meant general loands at first....with regards to the HPSL thing...that I really am not sure of that cause I didn't apply for it. But probably independent = only your info.

Correction: I didn't mean FAFSA--that really does need to be filled out ASAP. As far as any other preparations go: they'd just have to wait till May, because right now I'm struggling with my last semester of P-chem and advanced inorganic. Wow, it's all happening so fast right after that letter arrives...🙂

You will not qualify for Health Professions loans without your parents info. Put yourself down on FAFSA as independent, but also put your parental info if you have it, it can ONLY help you (it is required for some loans).

I do know that several schools have told me that if I don't get all the loans I need, I can petition for them to re-examine my case assuming i'll make NO money as a vet student (i.e. expected 08-09 income) and they'll take the changed circumstances into account (this is MN and WI). I'd say check with your fin aid office.

Wow you all are amazing, I feel so much better now! I went and looked at a bunch of different apartment complexes and houses while I was down there on my interview. Stonegate, The Mill, Carlton Scott, Foxridge, and Terrace Village (possibly wrong name) all allow pets I believe which is what I was basing my decision on.
