I applied early to 4 schools and haven't heard anything yet. My GPA is fine, but my OAT scores are quite as stellar as some of the ones that I've seen people talk about on here. Do you have any suggestions for me? It seems to me that really the only thing important to these schools whether they say so or not is the OAT scores. Otherwise, I'm almost sure I would have been contacted already. I am taking the OAT again though soon, but I'm worried I'll F it up since there's gonna be a lot of pressure to do well.

Call the schools.

If you haven't recieved a letter of rejection you are not rejected.
Alot of things happen between February and as late as April/May so don't give up yet.

when did you apply? which schools? i would contact the schools and ask about your status. there is still time left for sure, so try not to worry too much. but if this is what you want, you have to go get it yourself. good luck on the OAT again, im sure if you studied you will be fine. good luck

I would also suggest you to call the schools ASAP because probably they are still waiting for some of the documents for your application. So it is safer to call and make sure that they have received EVERYTHING. Good luck! and don't worry too much, you will do just fine on your next OAT.

I wrote a letter after the fall semester and said about the courses I took and the grades and all the good stuff I could say about myself. I sent it to every school that I applied to, but none of them wrote anything back. I wasn't really asking for a response though I guess.

In the past I've read posts here where people have said that they got into different schools with an OAT score as low as 280 or 290, but recently I just read someone's post who got waitlisted with a 360. That worries me...do you need that high of a score to get in now?

I see that you go to NECO. That was one of the schools that I applied to. They sent me a postcard back in December that said they were still reviewing my file. I'm not sure if that's a good sign or a bad sign or no sign at all. I might send an email to the dean. I sent a letter to him at the end of December too. Maybe I should call and try to talk to him. I don't think it's real effective though when I call the admissions office and just talk to whoever works there. It never seems to get me very far.

Do you have any suggestions on who to talk to, or what to say if I would call?
Thanks

I feel that for NECO, if they want u, they will reply within 2-3 weeks. That's what happened for me and someone I know.
There's no harm in calling. I did that with another school and asked them for the progress of my application. They just gave me an approximate date for when I should expect results.

You can't just look at people's OAT scores and tell if they're gonna get in or not, and it does more harm than good to think about things in that light. I mean, I got a 380 OAT and I'm currently on hold. The bottom line is that if they're convinced that you'll be a successful optometry student, they'll admit you. OAT scores only tell part of that story.

Think about what you want to say to the schools, give them a call, and do some convincing. You want to be an optometrist!

380 and you're on hold. wow. I talked to the admissions office at neco today, but it was pretty much a waste. I guess you have to talk to the dean if you want to get anywhere. I think my best chance of getting in though would be at PCO. I visited that school and I've talked to the dean before. Everytime I talk to someone at NECO, they're either rude or not helpful.

I do agree with you but a 380 and you are not in?! Did you apply late and did you only apply to one school? ? What is your story?

380 OAT? Wow. What's your GPA? I'm guessing your interview went very bad, since they put you on hold?

Good Lord...380 and on hold??!!??!!?? Do you have a GPA under 0.50? Are you a serial felon? In all seriousness, unless you don't have all of your prereqs filled, you applied late, or your grades really subpar I am really suprised that you are not a first tier selection. I am stupefied. Now I'm REALLY nervous about my chances...
At any rate, I hope you get in. Good Luck. Keep us posted.

i hope I get in too. I don't know that I made enough of an impression that I really want to be an optometrist, and that I've thought long and hard about it being my career choice.

it's one thing to have the scores and the grades, it's another to have the glint in your eye (pun not intended) when you talk about giving some kid a pair of glasses so she can finally read the blackboard again, or when you explain to someone what it means when you say they have an astigmatism.

And no, I'm not a serial felon.

yet.

I applied to one school in November. And no, I'm not considering MD. my wife's in med school. Not for me.

Thanks for the wishes. i've got my fingers crossed.

while we're on the subject. i have a concern about getting in too. i have an oat of 360 but currently a gpa of 2.9 but even a lower optm pre-req a 2.7. i plan to apply next yr but if y'all think it's unrealistic then i guess i should rethink. anyone know people who got into opt school with 2.7s?? if i take the oat again n get a higher score would that even matter...? 🙁🙁🙁 i interned at scco, a vision therapy office, new private office, 40 yr established office and some other random ones all for 3+ months each and 1.5 yrs at one of them so hopefully that shows my interest in opt. i also have a bunch of ECs n leadership stuff too. any input, even harsh ones, would be appreciated. thanks.

Call the schools you are interested in. Ask them what you should do, if anything, to improve your chances of admissions.

I am in almost the same boat as u. I have an overall gpa of 2.7, prereq gpa of 3.0, AA of 350 and TS of 360. I got four interviews out of the five schools I applied to, including SUNY and Berkeley. I definitely think it was all my extracurriculars that made me stand out, so if u got all that goin gfor u, u definitely have a chance... stay positive!!!
