I want some information about DO's and being able to sign outside the match.

First, is it possible?

Second, is it feasible (do allopathic programs actually look to do this if they want you).

Third, i was asking my friend about this (who didn't know much either, but know more than me) and he said that the people who decided the rules postponed the rules until 2005. So does this mean that if you graduate in 2006, you can't sign outside the match? or can you sign in 2005 for when you graduate in 2006, assuming the unlikely scenario that an allopathic residency program really wants you that much. in other words, what is the extent to which you can sign outside the match? is there a time frame? is there any regulation there?

Just curious and nosy...

Yes I believe that US DO seniors have been able to sign outside the match. I have no idea how often it happens but I'm pretty sure it doesn't happen at competitive programs.

As for the rules - the year refers to the graduating class, so they have postponed it for the class of 2005 but I expect the rule will be changed by the class of 2006.

DO's can sign outside of the match. It happens very frequently in the osteopathic match, in fact, i would be surprised if anyone did not sign outside of the match. Actually, verbal agreements are usually obtained, but I had a few offers wanting me to write a letter of intent.
DO's can also sign outside of the match in the allopathic match. This happens rarely though. If a program really is interested in an applicant, and that applicant is interested in a DO spot (which has an earlier match) they will rarely sign outside of the match. I had a few friends in school match this way.....
