Hi guys Im new. Im gad to have found this place because it seems like the right place for me. I will start off by letting you guys know my story and you can tell me what you think.

Im 20 years old and Im about to finish my first year of community college. I have a GED and am currently a Liberal Arts major. I have recently decided to persue a career in medicine. The reason for the GED is due to a chronic illness I had from the ages of 14-18 or so, and then having 5 collapsed lungs last year resulting in lung surgery. This did not aid in a traditional path of four years of highschool.I have signed up for fall classes to begin the pre reqs for med school and am planning on transfering to a 4 year program after next year. Im just looking for peoples advice on how they think I should handle all of this, and any words of encouragement. Let me know what you guys think, Thanks - Nick 🙂

First off - congrats. sounds like you've had a hard road. 🙂

Second - also sounds like you've been doing your research and planning. Keep up the good work, study hard, play hard, and get some good volunteer and clinical exposure in before you apply.

Third - man, you have the makings of an incredible PS.

Welcome aboard!!!!

Thanks for the reply ShyRem.Yes I have had a very difficult few years however I look at it as a learning experience and that it could have been a lot worse, and yes I have been doing a lot of research. I am extremely motivated however it's hard because Im so far from where I would love to eventually end up. I agree with you that I could write one hell of a PS; even though Im years from having to write one I already have been jotting down some stuff I want to put in there. I just hope I can stay motivated and make this dream a reality - Nick 👍

Welcome, and congratulations! This forum in particular is very supportive so don't be too shy if you have questions. Good luck!

Welcome to you!

This is a great place to field any question you might have.

Congratulations and welcome aboard.

Sounds like you are on the right path- make sure you do a good job on the pre-reqs and nail the MCAT.

Others are right- you will have a kick ass personal statement.

As far as other advice- I would recommend becoming an EMT- it was great clinical experience. I also loved volunteering in the Emergency Department doing clinical research- find a department that will let you work on papers as a co-author--they are out there. If you have the time, some traditional lab research can't hurt. Maybe even related to your chronic illness. It is also pretty easy to get certified as a CPR/First Aid Instructor and that can open some doors as well. The Red Cross also has certification programs for disaster medicine and emergency preparedness.
