Is this a bad idea? I really don't want to fall behind in pre-reqs. My regular advisor and mom suggested taking Bio alone instead of with Chemistry. They said i shouldn't overload myself in my first semester. What do you guys think? should intake Chem too? I'm going to talk to my pre-med advisor tomorrow to get his say on it.

It will be fine. Chill out. You have 4 years (maybe 3 if you do it like I did). It is enough time to get everything done. Take them slowly and don't burn yourself out.

It's whatever you think you will be comfortable. If you have no idea where your comfort zone is, you can probably take a bunch of courses, and if you can't handle them, you can drop them by the drop deadline with no consequence.

The advisers at our school schedule the incoming sophomores for chem, bio, and calc I.... and it seems that everyone can handle those three courses + one other pretty well.

You will be fine if you take only take one science class in your first semester, I did that. However, I might suggest taking Gen Chem instead of Bio unless your school offers Gen Chem I in the spring. You don't want to be a full year behind in chemistry, because then you won't be done with Orgo until the end of junior year which will put you behind in MCAT studying. Most schools that I know of let you take Bio II before Bio I, so you will only be one semester behind here.

I do want to apply junior year though.

Yeah, taking Chem does seem to make more sense.

Take 1 science your first semester. Ease into college, but amp it up your second semester and continue to build on it.

What?

It's "schedule" not "scheduled" since the rest of my sentence is in the same tense.

Nice try though honeeeyy !!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

And nice edit. How embarrassing!

Lmao I misread it the first time.

I would say take it easy for your first year, I don't see why you couldn't take two science courses per semester. I would recommend taking two science courses and one or two easy classes depending on how many credit hours each class is.

Take chemistry too. Develop some confidence in yourself -- if you do the work you'll be fine.

1. Advisors are picked up from the streets. Do your own research, consult the advisor for an OK.

2. Many people opt to not take a science class their first semester. They want to ease into college and party. Depending on your school, this may set you "off"

Ideally you would take bio 1 fall and bio 2 spring right? Well, if you take bio 1 spring semester, chances are you're mixed in with the off batch(people who are retaking, skipped the class, etc.)

You might get stuck with a professor who doesn't want to be teaching that "off" class.

You have plenty of time, but that's just something to consider. By taking this semester off, you're offsetting all your courses.

Something to consider: You can get through chem without any bio, but you'll need a bit of chem for bio. I'd take chem first if anything.

I love how you have been here for two weeks and you're giving advice already. 😎

Hmmmm maybe because I did it in undergrad and graduated successfully : /

You can ease into college with a loaded science schedule, and party all you want. It's whatever you're comfortable with for classes.

OP I would just take bio and chem together, they really are not hard at all. You just have to study, have good time management, and don't go partying all the time. You might even get bored just taking one science class, I know I would.

I did the same thing. I had no idea what going into college would be like, and I only took Biology (with the lab) first semester. Second semester I started Chem 1. Still finished all my medical school pre-reqs by first semester junior year.

Cool, thanks a lot.

You should be OK with taking one Science class. Just make sure you use that one class to find out the most efficient method of studying for you. Plenty of students at my school took two or three Science courses their freshman year and are still on pace to graduate in 4 years.

There's no need to rush taking courses as a Freshman, especially if you think you will feel overwhelmed.

EDIT- I would also like to mention that I took an opposite approach. I just finished up my freshman year and took Gen Chem 1 and 2, Bio 1 and 2, Pre-Calculus and Calc I during that time. I took 17 credits my first semester followed by 18 in my second. During that time, I rarely ever felt overwhelmed with work. If you use your time this first year to build great study habits, you will avoid many stressful situations once you start taking two Science courses at a time.

I am also taking two sciences at once, even though my counselor advice me not to. But I feel confident of myself and will put time into the classes. Disregard any distraction and you'll be just fine.
