IM-Peds

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The Army did at one time, but no longer. The only combined programs they offer now are IM/Psych and FM/Psych. I think the rationale was that the Army had no definable role for such physicians in their current workforce; they'd either utilize them as IM or Peds-trained docs, not both.

They did grant a few deferements the year that I came through Class of 2007 (4-6 I think). But with the shortage fo HPSP students, I don't know how likely that is in the future.

I'm also Navy HPSP and looking at a Med/Peds residency. My strategy is to:

1.) do an IM internship at a Navy hospital
2.) complete my 4 year payback in Flight Surgery, Dive Med, or GMO
3.) move on to a civilian Med/Peds residency as a PGY2 (while cashing in my GI bill).

Anyone out there with similar plans or has anyone followed an identical path as this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

After 4 years off you're probably not going to be able to jump into a program as a PGY2. If I were you, I would plan to repeat my internship. Especially since Med/Peds ahs an 18month internship.

If you are in the army, just do peds and then when you get sent to Iraq for fifteen months, you'll get plenty of opportunities to treat adults.

I spoke with some of the Med/Peds residents at my institution and they claimed that there are several instances of PGY2s transferring into their program after completing just an IM internship at another institution. Of course these transferees wound up completing their MedPeds residencies in slightly more than 4 years total. I plan on talking to the MedPeds director soon and will ask him if spending 4 years past my internship year as a GMO could cost me a slot as a PGY2.
