IM program invites

I mean how can an LOI hurt you tho? It can only help you. I see NO reason for a program to interview someone without the intention of atleast ranking them, maybe your LOI can help you get ranked a bit higher. This story sounds untrue, and if true, what a waste a time for both the person and the program. No program is worth wasting your time even if it's a soo called top program. Programs have a limited number of interviews and if they are just simply interviewing DO's for drive by looks they are wasting a lot of time. The Reddit poster is overthinking it, they should rank them #1 if they want, irregardless of anything since the match favors the applicant not the program. Unless the program straight up says we won't rank you. This is different if the person did an away there, didn't get an interview and then they pretty much begged for a courtesy interview in which case maybe the program will DNR them, but your case and the Reddit post are not that..
I dont think an LOI will hurt you but if we only can send one I was thinking if its important to send it to a place you actually have a really good chance matching at …sending it to a top tier place where there are no DOs seems a bit of a waste…like at a top tier place im wondering if LOI would really make that much of a difference

I don't think you can only send one?? I would not send like 10 but 2-3 LOI to your top places would be okay? I mean sending it at a place where they already have you ranked high enough to match is also a waste, so I would do 1 reach program and 1 at a "safety" place you really want to be at.

it being a non-academic center, being fellow ran, fellowships are more difficult to obtain in house etc
Lol CC foundation is an academic center, no clue how anyone would define it as anything else. Thier fellowship match is incredible. I would rather be somewhere better than CCF anyway for fellowship(location wise)

I hate when programs do this. I hope Vandy doesnt do this but they probably do

I can't see it, there is no reason for them to give someone a drive by interview. Your chances are the same as anyone else they interviewed. They won't waste an interview spot just for the heck of it lol

Oh..yeah I was just under the impression we should only send 1 ...it would be nice to be able to send 2-3 ...

I legit cant believe its almost december and after sending like 15 LOIs many to places im way overqualified for have ghosted me. So far out of those 15 I got 2 rejections (UVA and Tufts) and the rest silence. So frustrating lol Im praying i can net like 2 more invites between now and Jan

The issue is the LOI game has gotten absolutely ridiculous, as evidenced by the numbers in thread… how are programs supposed to take them seriously when they know applicants are spamming them out as if they were secondary applications? I know my program doesn’t even read them anymore…

I mean you arent wrong but like as a DO you cant just sit idle and Idk what else to do at this point. As DOs we gotta be proactive but unfortutunately the game has ended up not working in our favor at this point bc the LOI has now become something of little to no value bc of virtual interviews it sucks. Virtual interviews just suck

Yea I hope they go back to in person after this year..

Anyone hear back from former AOA programs in the Midwest/East Coast? Reddit spreadsheet shows little to no movement with those programs...

LOIs lost their value because everyone is blasting them out, not because of virtual interviews.

When you send out 15 letters of “intent” how strong is your actual intent? Programs aren’t dumb.

I get why applicants do it, it’s the classic prisoners dilemma, but it’s not because of virtual interviews.

Edit: I know it’s hard to hear but your app is in. LOIs almost never have any impact. Even as a DO once your app is in there is nothing you can do except wait and “sit idle.”

Apparently some DO got a UVA interview no LOI no signal OOS. I guess it wasnt my DO status that got me rejected. This process is so weird. Also kind of confused Ive heard nothing from GW

Have u heard any DOs get an invite from GW? I didn't see any on the google sheet.

So youre telling me even before virtual interviews people sent out this many LOIs i find that hard to believe

It's been a last ditch effort trying to grub for interviews for far longer than virtual interviews... just like application fever its just been getting worse and worse.

This isn't a new phenomenon.

THIS YEAR IS THE WORST YEAR AND UNLIKE ANY OTHER.

The amount of times this has been said on spreadsheets and the rad discord is comical. It's like people didn't know covid was a thing last year too lol.

I actually called my former program for my advisee who had no ii's in early Dec. He was a non trad rock star. He went on to get several interviews in Dec and matched where many consider it to be the #1 program in the nation. I have noticed DO students getting interviews later in the year. I can't explain it, but I think they interview DOs later now. That was a couple years ago, and the match games has been changing quickly, so it might be different now. I do think it's too early to panic. Good luck and best wishes.

This post made my week. Thank you @Angus Avagadro I appreciate your insight always

You guys are are talking about two different LOIs, I think. The one that you should only send 1 of is the one you send during rank list time, when you tell a program "I am ranking you #1". Obviously, you shouldn't send more than 1 of these. The other LOI is just a letter of interest requesting an interview and outlining the reasons why you want to go to the program/think you're a good fit. You can send multiple, but as discussed, they may not mean anything because of this. I sent 3, didn't net any interviews from them.

Anyone know where Cleveland Clinic Florida compares with the main campus? I know it's obviously not as good, and it's a much smaller hospital, but I'm wondering if the Cleveland clinic name still has weight if you go there and if the education is similar
Residents (and fellows applying for advanced fellowship, lol) have all told me they feel the name carries weight and it is brought up in their interviews.

Hmm… i thought we were both talking about letter of intent..

I think there's some equivocation going on. @Deecee2DO is 100% talking about letters of INTEREST. I think that's what everyone has been referring to, but some are just calling them letters of "intent" instead which, as I understand, is an entirely different thing lol.

Yes intent is an entirely different thing. You only send ONE of those. You can send as many interests as you want (sending super high numbers could backfire i guess since people talk but i mean you do you). The general consensus is letters of interests dont really help that much but its all we got even if it only helps marginally its better than sitting idle especially if youre a DO

lol i think theres just too many convo going on cause when I was talking about LOI.. I was responding to @FutureDoctor5000 who mentioned sending LOI after an interview for ranking

Yep agreed.. its interesting bc Letters of interest have worked only when I mentioned Couples Matching otherwise I’ve been ghosted

So If we haven't gotten a ton of rejections, I have like 2 rejections, is it safe to assume we can hear from a few more places in December?

Nope none from former AOA programs like Doctors in Columbus etc.. I have no clue what's going on what those programs tbh

November for me-no invites and 4 rejections (UTennessee, UVA, UNC Tufts). Awesome lol the latter three i understand since they are all anti-DO but Tennessee? lmao what?

Yet I know of DO's getting UNC and UVA. The process is akin to picking names out of a hat. Completely random. Tennessee said they looked at preference signaling and I didn't signal them so that's why we got the R?

Yeah I def didnt signal them at all. i know its all random man its stupid. I got interviews at better places without DOs and then hear UNC and UVA interview DOs makes no sense

Yea like I said it's completely random. I have been ghosted by places I signaled for no reason and gotten other simmilar programs I didn't signal smhh

Tulane interview!! Apparently they are on probation? its still an interview at a solid academic program and one I really liked but should I be worried about the probation thing? some racism allegation

edit: I heard its the med-peds dept

Well, I don't think anything is safe to assume. Just reporting my experience with students I have endorsed over the last couple years. I think the chance of Dec interviews is good., according to my experience.

I did an away in Louisiana (not at Tulane and not in IM) and the Tulane problems were a hot topic. The residents and students I talked to said that everyone they knew from Tulane was talking about all of the problems there. They were insinuating that the racism issue in the one department was only the tip of the iceberg. People from Louisiana I interacted with who were looking to match IM were talking about not even applying to Tulane because of what’s been going on. Louisiana residents looking to match rads weren’t applying to Tulane either... the local fourth year I was with is from New Orleans and his family is there. He wants to go back but did not apply to Tulane.

Obviously this is super anecdotal and a game of telephone, and I know nothing for myself, but I thought I would contribute what I heard. I would take the interview but I would do some serious digging and ask the residents a lot of questions in the social.

Thanks for the insight! As long as I dont have issues with getting boarded and the culture isnt toxic i really dont care tbh I just want to do my 3 years and match to a solid fellowship. It doesnt seem like it reallt affected their fellowship match at all its still pretty impressive

Anyone hear anything from GW yet? Whats their deal? lol its been over a month since I sent them an LOI and spoke with PC. should I send another LOI to like nudge them a little? lol or am I being obnoxious

Do you know if they have interview spots left?

So far this week it has only been rejections for me.. anyone get an invite?

I saw on the spreadsheet some people got invites. I wouldn't send a second LOI, I think that would annoy them

Texas Tech the day after Thanksgiving at 1130pm lol but thats it. Not super pumped about the program by any means but hey its another invite and I needed them. Im finally at 13 so I think im good as far as being safe but Im still waiting on GW Emory Miami and Baylor

Miami and Baylor dates are full as of now but maybe more movement will occur in December

noooo BCM houston? (not BUMC Dallas or BSW). Do u know this for sure? do you have an interview at BCM houston?
Yeah i have an iv at BCM houston. The dates are full on ERAS unless they have other dates that dont show up for me.

Anyone think its worth reaching out to a program if you are waitlisted for an interview date or should I just wait?
