I'm sure it's not possible but . . . (attention U of Mich students)

I will be an MS1 at U of M in the fall. However, my family is having this wedding/get away at the beginning of December (Dec 7 - 14th). According to our tentative schedule, we don't get out for break until the 21st or so. I'm sure it will be impossible for me to miss a week of classes, and I'm guessing there will be exams before christmas break (though I did read and hear from students about the quiz/exam deferral option)??? I thought it was worth a shot to get some feedback from students before I told my family for sure that I can't go <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

Not a u of mich student, but I would suggest contacting the admissions office asking them to get you the e-mails of the course master(s) for the tests that you are interested in missing. If they do not have it, ask them to give you the e-mail of a current 1st year student who would know who to contact. Usually, the admissions office people are the people that you need to work through before you actually are enrolled. If they are no help though, you can always contact student affairs though. You can probably find the student affairs office by searching the mich website.

Hi Nikki

Congrads on coming to UMich, its an awesome school. Actually I think the first year curriculum is pretty flexible. I'm not sure if they said anything to you in the application process but all the lectures are video taped and those tapes are now available to the students. This year we have been trying very hard to get the video tapes online and there is currently a proposal to get the lectures on the web for next year (this is a proposal but it seems like it will happen). You generally also have a 2 or 3 day window when you can just walk into the computer lab and take your quiz so that's also flexible. The staff is generally very understanding too, you should talk to the staff but if it is someone close getting married to you and you really want to be there it should be possible for you to take a couple of days off.

Best of luck

Hendooneh thank you so much for your reply . . . I did not know that the lectures were videotaped in the first year. Do you take any big exams right before you leave for christmas vacation, or are there only quizzes near that time?

I think there are exams before you leave. If I remember correctly there is an anatomy exam which is pretty hard, still pass/fail though :) and you probably should be there for the anatomy practical which is done in the anatomy lab with tags. But with a little studying ahead and a good set of phi-chi class notes from the last year you should be fine. I know a lot of people who just didn't go to school other than the required things and to take exams and they did just fine, although if you are the type who needs class there are always the video tapes like I mentioned before.
