I'm reading through some posts here and I really don't understand why Podiatry is not an allopathic/osteopathic medical specialty rather than an isolated medical specialty. I guess I never understood this. I see so many posts claiming that podiatrists get little respect. If anything, diseases of the lower extremities, particularly the foot have a HUGE impact on systemic well being. I know when I wear cheap shoes, my knees kill me. I know of people with chronic back pain from foot problems. I think podiatry is awesome and you guys should be proud of this field.

For me, I'm starting dental school. We have our MD vs DDS battles and honestly, I don't even understand why dentistry isn't an allopathic / osteopathic medical specialty. Of course so much of ours after the first 2 years is hands on technical surgical training that I guess doesn't waste as much time and cuts right to the chase...so that is probably part of it. But hey, point is, podiatry, in my opinion is one of the most important, rewarding medical specialties. Good job guys!

you can do a simple google search to find out the history of dentistry and as well for podiatry. Dentistry started as part of allopathic but then branched off.

Podiatry started as chiropody which was never part of allopathic medicine but the field has progressed (sp?) to become a surgical specialty that is based on allopathic medicine.

These explanations are very very "in a nut shell".

At this point, one could make the argument that it should be. But you have to realize that podiatry hasn't always been like this. It is only over the last decade or so that it has really evolved into a surgical sub-specialty.
