IMG Internal Medicine Applicants - Match 2021

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know this could be affected by many factors, but this thread is still in 19th page (and we are 6 weeks after programs started reviewing-during a shortened interview period) while the same thread from last year was on 1st October, only 2 weeks after the programs got access.

Back then it was considered too early for IMGs to receive a lot of IVs, now the season has shown signs of ending. I know this could be also affected by random events (last year maybe more IMG applicants used SDN and that thread to write, or maybe they were talking too much while this year we don't...), but the difference is huge and I believe it's true that overall the IMGs received less interviews this year.

here is last year's thread: IMG Internal Medicine Applicants - Match 2020

EDIT: also comparable situation with last year's thread was in Match 2019, when the thread was at 19th page Oct 9th (3 weeks after). IMG Internal Medicine Applicants - Match 2019
Like trying to compare bone densities from 2 different machines, it’s not accurate to compare last years match with this years one.

Rejections
1. Northside Hospital Gwinnett
2. Amita Health Saint Francis Hospital (after LOI)
3. Kettering Health Network (after LOI)

Mountain View Regional Medical Center Program - Rejection (Interview slots full)

Are you getting all these rejections after sending LOIs? I haven’t heard back from most of the programs you just mentioned above. I applied to them all.

Got only one rejection today: Northside Gwinnett program, Georgia

I think you were lucky to e-mail responsive programs. I’ve sent 30 LOIs and I’ve only got one rejection (in a probably unrelated wave) and silence from everyone else.

I agree with you. I sent close to probably 100 a week or two ago. They were not super generic, a little personalized to each program (yeah you guys can see how much free time I have and basically have no life, lol). Still, there were no responses. I didn’t even get any rejection in response to my LOIs except only one. All the other rejections were with the mass rejection waves.

Norwalk Hospital/Yale University Program - Rejection (after LOI)
Thank you for reaching out and for your interest in our program. Our admissions committee has now send all interview invitations and waitlist invitations for all of our tracks. We had so many wonderful candidates but are unfortunately limited by our interview spots.

Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, CO - Rejection (after LOI)
Our interview schedule is currently full, but we will keep your information on file.

Did you get the Norwalk response directly through your e-mail or through ERAS? And how long after you sent the LOI?

San Ysidro Health’s Internal Medicine Residency Program - Rejection after LOI
Thank you for applying for a residency position at the San Ysidro Health’s Internal Medicine Residency Program. The review of the application materials submitted to ERAS is complete. Unfortunately all of our interview spots are filled with multiple people on a waiting list. If something opens up, we will be in touch. At this point, no more interviews will be offered.

Ok. Thanks. I sent them an LOI a week ago and I haven’t received any reply. I suppose they set an automated response now that they have filled all their spots.

I had also sent an email to Norwalk hospital, CT about a couple of weeks ago. No response.

I got invited there. Is that a good program?

Sorry buddy, no idea about the program itself. It’s affiliated with Yale so that’s a good thing. Plus it’s in New England (that’s my dream location ).

Congratulations on the invite though. I’m happy for you! Did you get it after sending LOI?

Right. Thank you!
No, I did not send anything.

It May Be Too Late to Avoid a Crisis in the Surgery Match This Year

Ronald J. Weigel, MD, PhD, FACS; Steven C. Stain, MD, FACS; and L. Scott Levin, MD, FACS, FAOA

Are you hearing that outstanding medical students applying for surgical residencies are being wait-listed for an interview at top training programs? The problem may be yet another unfortunate consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In normal years, programs have cancellations because there is a physical limitation for how many interviews a student can do. This year, the pandemic forced programs to go to virtual interviews, and a small group of top students nationally appear to be filling all the interview slots for the top programs. If this is true, then many of those programs may go unfilled in the match.

For example, if the average number of interviews offered by a program is 100, and these programs are all competing for the same pool of 100 intern applicants, the pool of top students interviewed may be too small to fill all the slots in these programs. Additionally, the current interview process may create disadvantages for minority applicants and students from schools that are not considered "top tier."

With virtual interviews allowing students to interview at a larger number of programs, we may need a different system nationally for the allocation of interview slots, such as rolling acceptances for interviews with students being required to commit only to a set number of programs, which would allow additional students the opportunity to be interviewed. The solution will require program directors and surgical leaders nationally to discuss this issue. It may be too late to avoid a crisis in the match this year.

I received an interview from a uni program on the 14th (opened due to a last min cancellation)

And that coincides with my interview date with another program. I'm waitlisted now and HEARTBROKEN 😢

Priorities! That's a good problem to have, congrats!
