How competitive is it for IMG to obtain a PGY-1 internship?

The majority of unmatched grads obtain a temporary one-year residency spot with no guarantee of future training. They then reapply the following year with hopes of landing a permanent, multi-year residency position.

It's becoming increasingly competitive with more and more US trained students entering the match without an increase in the number of residency positions.

However, the crux of the problem is mentioned in your quote above and that is finding a full training position and not just an intern year can be difficult.

I think it is better to a get a preliminary position. It will give you a chance to show yourself and perhaps stand out from crowd.
