Hi, I'm an UK graduated IMG coming to work in Australia this January under the Competent Authority Pathway scheme. After 1 year Aussie experience and passing the workplace assessment I can apply for full licence. I intend to apply for Aussie PR in the coming year as well.

I just have a question here. I want to specialise in either GP or internal medicine. How competitive is it to get into training program in Australia given my IMG status?

Thanks for answering.

Both are fairly easy for IMGs to get into, however it is very unlikely that you will be able to get a good IM fellowship in a major capital city hospital. That being said an IMG I know this year who passed his BPT exams got into Endocrinology, which is considered very competitive, and he got into the RPA in Sydney. So anything is possible.

You will find fellowships in Cardiology and Gastroenterology quite competitive, but there were some changes to Cardiology this year that might make it less so in the future.
