Anyone have experience with this book? I'm drowning.

I feel like I faked my way into med school by taking easy professors in undergrad and getting lucky on the MCAT. I feel like I'm going to flunk out.

no experience with the book, but it sounds like you have imposter syndrome! you got into med school because you deserve to be in med school!

i've heard good things about microbiology made ridiculously simple, so maybe this one should be good too.

I've only used clinical micro made ridiculously simple, but a classmate has several others in that series and really likes them. I used How the Immune System Works and it was very helpful to get a good overview, then fill in details from lectures and the required text.

Lizzie, if you're really struggling, talk to either a lecturer or someone in your Med Ed office and see what they can offer for you. At my school, M4s can do an elective where they get credit for tutoring M1s and 2s who are struggling with something. I've found that in medical school, help is generally available but you need to pipe up and ask for it. 🙂

sorry to bring up an old thread... but any other comments on this book? I just bought it after I read the raving reviews on amazon...

I'm getting lost in the details... it's hard to explain... I did VERY well on the first exam, but I feel like I have no clue what the hell I'm doing... my knowledge is scattered. I can't seem to tie things together... maybe I'm weird i guess...

Nope, that's immuno for you (or at least for me). I did really well in the class but always felt like I was really having trouble piecing things together.

I ended up getting the Lange/Levinson book ( http://www.amazon.com/Review-Medica...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270105352&sr=8-1 ) and only used the 90 pages or so for Immuno (I used CMMRS for the Micro part of our class). I actually bought it towards the end of the Immuno part of our course and wish I had had it sooner. It does a good job of giving a solid overview of how it all works.

I'm using it again now to brush up on Immuno for the boards, and I'm glad I have it.

I have some notes if anyone wants. I am not sure how useful they are but my lecturer wrote the immunology section in a new molecular medicine textbook published by my university. If anyone wants I have some of his lectures in powerpoint form. Because these notes were distributed I don't see a copyright issue. (the department in question does a lot of work to prevent it)

Also, if you want a good textbook to read then get the Lippincott's Immunology. It is great, in color, and succinct.

And don't worry about medical school being hard... it's supposed to be.

Get your mind straight, be confident, and you will do better. If you couldn't handle the load you wouldn't be in medical school. Approach every bit of studying and school work as something you were made to do and you will be fine. Don't get discouraged, just DO WHAT YOU DO.

I'm using Immunology by Lippincott and I really like it (but I should warn you that it's quite detailed.)

I've used many from that series, and honestly none come close to comparing with the micro one. The best of the rest include psych, cardiology, radiology. Beyond that I found they actually made things like physiology ridiculously complicated. You find very few of the memorable cartoons and cute mnemonics in the others -- the writers obviously didn't read the micro book or understand the format - they basically wrote a short text on the subject with minimal humor. I'd steer clear of the other books in this series unless you know someone who used that particular subject, because the mark is missed so often.

Roadmap to Immunology by Michael Parmely was our immuno bible. then again, Parmely is the one who taught our class so take my experience as you wish

Just wanted to say that I finished reading this book. It took me about 10 hours to read in one sitting. I'm usually a fast reader, but I think it took me so long because I was taking notes. It's about 130 pages. I don't think I'll ever read a better immuno book. Note that we also have a great immuno textbook by Parham (the immune system, 3rd ed), which I'm comparing it to. This book is pretty amazing in keeping things simple and giving you a general idea. I'll definitely be reading it at least two or three more times before step 1.

As for the person who's asking about the lippincotts immuno book, I ended up getting it, and went through the first 50 pages or so, but I didn't think it was "that" great. The biochem book in that series blows it out of the water.

As for micro made ridiciculously simple, it's a fantastic book in my opinion (though I haven't really read anything else micro related besides our lecture notes, so not much to compare it to).

side note: seems that everyone tends to fall into that trap where they find an amazing book in a series, and think that they might get as lucky with the other books in that same series (which is why I bought lippincotts' immuno after I read the biochem one). Looks like it's rare that a series will come up with more than one good book...

I have that book. I used Lippincott for biochem & it was great for that.

The immunology book is good too, BUT... I'd hesitate to say it actually helped my performance in class. I think it will definitely be good to have when studying for Step 1 & actually learning the material.

The prob with the class was, we just had a lot of material at once & lot of microbe stuff to memorize concurrently... so I feel like immunology is really a whirlwind that struck me & left. Ah well.

As with any text, it's only good insofar as there's enough time to both use it & the class notes.
