Hey guys,

I have an immunology class this semester, and my one major assignment is to write a review paper on any immunology topic of my choice. For people who have taken immunology and related courses, do you have any suggestions? Anything that might have interested you? Any topic that has much more information available than others? Thanks!

I have to take immunology this spring... starting Jan 17th. But my Microbiology class covered a lot of immunology and we had to do a paper... I did mine on the Varicella-Zoster vaccine (Chicken Pox). There's plentiful info on it and it is a relatively new vaccine so it's kind of interesting to think about the cost-benefit of it in the social sense... at least I thought so. 👍

Not a terribly "sexy" topic, but interesting anyhow. I learned a lot.

I did mine on the vaccine called "Rotashield" for Rotavirus (viral enteritis). It was taken off the market in the US due to some adverse side-effects (bowel obstruction) that inflicted 1:30,000 infants that received the vaccine. Very nasty virus in kids..... :scared:

I am not sure of the scope of topics that are appropriate for your paper.

Can you just pick a disease and discuss the vaccines available or potential vaccines that are undergoing trials? Or is the paper supposed to be about how the immune system works in conditions such as MS or lupus (autoimmune diseases)?

I wrote my on the genetics of antibody diversity. For micro, I focused on mad cow disease.

Write about how HIV/AIDS destroy CD4+/CD8+ T-cells.

I think that would be picked up before I can even sign up for it! Although a really useful suggestion. Smilescali, the paper could be on any of the topics you mentioned. The instructions are not very specific.

You can do a report on something that is really cutting edge like single chain antibodies used in cancer research. There is a lot of information available online about this issue and also countless scientific papers discussing the nuaunces of the research. My particular research focuses on linker molecules between several different antibodies and I can point you towards good reading material if you are interested. I personally think the field and the topic is very exciting and well worth investigating. Who knows, you might decide to drop pharmacy and pursue a career as a researcher. Good luck!!

Thanks! I'll private message you if I do decide to choose that topic. Thank you all for such insightful responses.

XenoTransplantation is a pretty interesting and easy topic if you can get into it.

Oh boy; I would look into things like patient-specific cancer vaccines where immature APCs (like dendritic cells) are removed from the patient, cultured in growth factors and antigenic cancer proteins, then put back into the patient. I forget specifically what it's called but it's a pretty cool process.

Or following up on banana's suggestion: HPV and the link to cancer. This is a good topic too.

Oooh, that sounds really interesting... I've never heard of that.

It was hard for me to decide which topic to choose since I've only had one lecture of immunology so far. These are some great suggestions, and what I will do is that I'll take these to the professor and ask her about which one would be the most appropriate. Thanks again guys, I really appreciate it.

I looked them up in my old notes; they're called dendritic cell vaccines (collectively known as dendritic cell therapy).

FYI, programmed cell death (i.e. apoptosis) in cells of the immune system (specifically T cells) is a hot topic now too (FAS and FAS-L ligand binding).

I'm taking a bio course this semester called "Host and Microbe Interactions." I'm a microbio/immuno geek. PM me, I might be able to send you a powerpoint as a resource to start with if you're interested in following up on DC therapy.
