How important is it for an optometry student to become involved with student organizations? Is this something an employer looks for or sees as important when hiring an OD?

any input or experiences would be nice!!!

Hey,

Great question.

Here is my 2 cents - Yes it is VERY important

Why?

It is not something an employer looks for....

It is something that will one day introduce you to your employer.

See the difference?

Staying involved gives you such an advantage over people who are not involved.

It's about who you know not what you know. Staying involved in clubs like the AOSA, SVOSH and private practice clubs (SOAPP @ SUNY) are sooooo beneficial because you will meet amazing people.

Its not how it looks on your resume... Its about not even needing to create a resume one day. It is being involved in a club that will get you involved with the smartest and brightest people in the industry. Once you are "in" with them, why would you ever need to show your resume?

You are already qualified.

Go get involved, you will be glad you did.

Do you go to optometry school currently?

Also, check out this article on clubs and such -

Hope this helps!
