I was looking at the resident profiles for some of the top residency programs and residents always seem to be from a "top tier" med school. Do these people just happen to be better applicants or do residency programs highly value the reputation of your med school when making their rank lists (I've been told this is true, as it makes them look good when their residents all come from big name med schools)?

If this is true, which med schools would be considered "big name" for these programs? Top 10? top 20?

I trained at a top 10 residency and went to a good medical school, but it wasn't even in the top 25 as far as med schools go.

The ones who matched came from all over the place. Once I was in and got to participate in screening new applicants, I saw that med school reputation played a very small role in who got invited to interview. The one exception was foreign med schools. Pretty much all of those applications were nixed in the first round.

Even the top foreign med schools?

What would be an example of a "top foreign med school"? The foreign med schools I am thinking of are the for-profit schools in the Caribbean.

There are lots of excellent schools in canada, australia, greece, india, scotland, UK, etc etc. you're right, caribs would stand absolutely no chance at these places

Yeah I was thinking more along the lines of the European med schools, but you're right in that Carribean grads have no chance.
