So, I'm non-trad student and I work all day while trying to finish my pre req classes for med school at night. Unfortunately organic chemistry isn't offered at night in the area that I live in, but there are "intro to general/organic chem" and "elements of organic/biochem" classes that I can take at night which include a lab. So, would these 2 classes satisfy the requirement for 1 year of organic chemistry? (These 2 classes aren't in a series together)

Intro to organic chem and elements of organic chem (both with labs) sound like it should suffice. (Technically, they are two semesters of "organic chemistry.") If they are not in a series together, do their materials overlap? If they do overlap, I am not sure how much more you need to teach yourself for organic chem in MCAT.

I don't know anyone who got accepted with two semesters of organic chem that are not in series, so it is just my opinion.

are you guys really sure about your answers? I really think that if the school offers a regular organic class (just not at night) then the intro classes would not count. At my school the intro classes are only for dental hygiene or nursing students and you really do miss out on a lot of information and people can see that you took the other class. This is a pre req so I would really call and ask before you take the class.

Sounds like the chem series Nursing majors are required to take.

Yea I've heard that nursing majors take these classes but the pre req requirement for med school is "1 year of organic chem with lab" (it doesn't say it has to be in a series or be a specific one) so wouldn't these classes be considered organic chem?

These will absolutely not work. I took both of them when I was thinking about nursing before deciding on medicine and they don't even scratch the surface of the Orgo series. You will not come close to being prepared for the MCAT with them and I think that many medical schools would not count them as they would know it was the nursing series.

I see. I'm not worried about how much it prepares me for the mcat because I can study the aspects of Orgo that these classes miss on my own, but I'm not sure if medical schools accept these 2 classes as Orgo.

No they won't. These classes combine general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry into one year, which would normally take three. To be honest, we covered as much in the first week or two of each series as this nursing series does the entire time. Schools often have secondaries that have you list classes and they are usually looking for organic chemistry, General chemistry, and physics I & II. The intro classes won't work for any of these. And studying the missed organic parts, while maybe possible, would be a pretty hard task on your own depending how much you like self study.

The same way it says biology but many don't take anatomy and physiology as substitutes of general biology. You can try to squeak by with those classes, but I'd wager the risk isn't worth it.

I'm caught in a difficult situation because I work all day and the regular Orgo series isn't offered at night so I can either take the classes that I mentioned or not take an Orgo class, not sure what to do 🙁

Find out if the Orgo series during the day will have an attendance policy and if not, hire a note taker and then do a lot of studying/learning on your own and just go to class on the days there are tests. I have no solution for the labs though.

Is this the only school in the area? Would it be possible to take it at another school? Can you do it over the summer? I know you work but summer is less time that you'd have to take off? Could you schedule it really early in the morning and ask your job if you can come in late one or 2 days a week? What time is the last class of the day? My school doesn't have an attendance policy for lecture just lab so I know a lot of people who only come in for exams.

You bring up a lot of good solutions, but unfortunately I can't do any of them because I have to work during the day, my work doesn't have flexible scheduling and all the institutions that are near where I live don't offer organic chemistry at night. So, I'm really not sure what to do. It seems like it's not even worth taking these 2 classes, but I'm not sure about the alternative...

Any thoughts on the online school that I mentioned?

No those classes will not work! You must go to your local university and take those courses if they are not offered at your CC. Most schools do not accept online pre-req's. goodluck!
