Hi everyone, I have been considering Optometry as a future profession. But, I do not want to major in sciences such as biology, geology, etc, because I've heard that there are lack of jobs in these fields. With that said, I have more Interest in Engineering because of better job opportunities. I would still like to be an optometrist, But due to my uncertainty of my acceptance to an optometry school (I only plan to apply to one) Would I be at a disadvantage if I majored in Engineering In contrast to students who have science-based majors?
Sorry if my english is mediocre, It isn't my first language.

Also, another question, What is tuition like in Optometry school?
What's the average student debt? Are there scholarships?

You could major in basket weaving and still get into optometry school as long as you finished your prerequisites and performed well. Just be sure to do well on the OAT and build up a good list of extra curricular activities as well. You should shadow as many optometrists in as many settings as you can, so you can be sure this is what you want to do. Though it's kind of risky to only apply to ONE optometry school, if your marks are high and your application strong, you could stand a good chance of getting in.

As for tuition...it relies heavily on what school you attend and if you're regional or non-regional. I've known doctors who left with more than $200K in debt and some that got away with less than $120K. Some people have more parental contribution than others, as well. Scholarships are available, you just have to go out there and get them.

Thank you for your response lol, I'm glad that you are allowed to freely choose your major, the only thing that i probaly dislike is the tuitions.
