Hi

I am a Massachusetts resident and wanted to apply to the University of Maryland. I was wondering if out of state appliers have to have better stats to get accepted to such schools as the university of Maryland, University of Virginia, and so on. Or are applicants from out of state less likely to apply and attend because of the great difference in price. THanks for any info concerning this sort of issue.

Yeah, it varies a lot. Some places, like Florida State, while not a super competitive school, will chase off OOS applicants with pitchforks and torches. Other schools such as Colorado welcome a high percentage of OOS students. Find the data so you know specifically which schools to look at. Without giving you the exact numbers, I would say based on their class size and applicant numbers, Maryland is decently open to OOS applicants, though mostly because there aren't that many IS applicants.

I'm a Maryland alum and the medical school taylors (or it did) to a ballpark 70% instate class. However, a sizeable fraction of the out-of-staters were kids with ties to the state/ grew up in Md and/or had left to go Ivy caliber colleges, often doctors kids of MD alums themselves. The out-of-state pool was, in general, on paper, more competitive and these candidates had mult offers and picked UMMS over JHU and GT because its so much cheaper and/or to make their dad happy and help with tuition.
