So I just got an invitation to interview at Boston University's Medical School in late January/early February.

1) To save money, I am thinking about sending the "in the area" email to some schools. However, I am not sure what is considered in the area per se as I am from the southwest and I have a rather substantial amount of schools in "THE AREA" (i think)....i know boston isnt far from new york, and new haven...and i dont think penn is too far from ny or boston...and dc not too far off......idk.......so if you could let me know which of these other schools I can consider in the area and email:

Tufts
Harvard
U Penn
Yale
Dartmouth
Columbia
Mount Sinai
NYMC
Georgetown

2) My second request......In my searching on this topic, I have been unable to find the answer regarding dates. if I am interviewing on day X, in my email, should i say I will be in the area during the week of (insert date here)? Won't I risk possibly having a potential interview assigned to that day? Or in the email, should I say I will be in the area during the week of (insert date here) but am not available on day X?.....OR......should I just suggest a day that I will be available? Idk.....I sincerely appreciate your help

Thanks SDN 🙂

I'd say Tufts, Harvard, Dartmouth and Yale are in the area. You don't have to be too specific in the e-mail, if they happen to give you an interview on the same day as your other one, you can get in touch and figure it out.

you're from Arizona, so I say send it to all of them. Might as well at this point since some schools take like 3 months to read an email.

thanks for the replies, guys. i appreciate it.

also, what about my second question.....regarding the dates to mention in the email?

Tufts and Harvard are in the same city, Dartmouth is probably a good 2 - 2.5 hour ride away, and Yale is about 3 - 3.5 hours away.

suck it up. if they didnt offer to interview u, dont go begging for one.

and yeah, your questions have been answered, try using google map, and if you still cant decide which school is in the area, i suggest just emailing all the schools since they are all in the US (in the area).

Georgetown is ridiculously far away from Boston. Driving down there for an interview on short notice would probably be exceedingly unwise (not to mention dangerous atm since the east coast is currently experiencing an epic snow storm)

begging for an interview? i wouldnt say that nor did i. where did you come up with that notion? i have been offered interviews already from very fine schools and am by no means "begging for one." Ever hear of cutting down costs? Not exactly cheap flying cross country.

and thanks for your smartass answers; you never have anything constructive to add. perhaps you should keep our belittling posts to yourself. i would appreciate it if you would no longer post in this or any subsequent threads i make. but again, thanks for your useless input as always.

good point. 👍

true.....its just flying from arizona isnt exactly the cheapest thing to do several times if i were to receive interviews from these or other schools listed. i figured i would get others' opinions since i have limited/minimal experience traveling in the New England portion of the country. thanks!

and anyone have opinions about the dates?

ok so definitely tufts and harvard are "in the area" of BU....

but how far away is new york (columbia, mt sinai, nymc) and penn (upenn) from boston via train/shuttle/bus/public transportation? for some reason, i think there is a train that goes back and forth between ny and penn and something between boston and ny? anyone?

Says this guy...

🙄

Boston is about 4 hours away from NYC by train (Amtrak).
NYC is about 1.5 hours from Philly by train (Amtrak).
New Haven is between Boston and NYC, and is just under 2 hours by train (Metro North) from NYC.
DC is ~7.5 hours from Boston by train, 3.5 from NYC, and 2 from Philly. Probably only 1.5 hours by air.

Hope this helps.

New York is about a 3-4 hour car ride depending on the traffic, from new york to penn state is probably around another 4 hour car ride

I think you can find a train that woud bring you from boston to new york, it would probably stop in Hartford, so that would be a good opportunity to stop at Uconn if your interested in their med school at all
