Independent applicants ... Planning to take gen Surg boards?

Hey all! So I am finishing my general surgery residency in a few months and was actually asked by my program why I wanted to take the gen Surg boards if I am going into plastics... Hadn't occurred to me that not taking them was an option. What are your thoughts? Anyone not taking the boards? Any future implications ?
