INDIANA UNIVERSITY

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Stein,

I just recieved an interview invitation from INDIANA U. I do not know too much about the school and was hoping that you could give me some additional info on it. Did you talk to any students when you went there? I know that their curriculum is heavily PBL based if not all but I was wondering how students were coping to that new enviornment. Please let me know ..Thanks

Actually, IU only uses PBL a little bit. They are mostly a traditional "lecture format" university with PBL sessions once a week I believe. PBL only takes a small portion of your time. Hope this helps.

Steiner,
Yup you got me man. I actually talked to alot of people, including the chair of the ortho dept here at Vandy and the chair of the perio dept at UAB. They both said that IU was a solid school and they have very high regards for the school, which is good news since they both are part of the admissions committees for the specialty programs of the schools. So maybe my interview day wasn't a good representation of the school itself. Yes I have sent in my deposit to IU as well as Penn, but have yet to finalize my decision on which one. They both will be very expensive since I'm out of state at IU. So hopefully I'll have an answer by early March so I can give someone else the spot at the other school! Let me know what you think if you have an opinion. Take care.

Congrats on your interview invite. I thought you were sold on Nova. Anyways I chose IU, b/c I liked the atmosphere, IU's reputation, and good board scores. Talking to many DDS's, lab techs, etc; I decided that IU was a better choice then UIC. IU gives you more hands on more quickly.

My choices were limited. Come on: IU or UIC (never heard from SIU). I am not a 4.0 student so I never expected to hear from IU. IU's facilities were nicer then UIC's, although older.
I have many personal reasons for choosing IU. Its kind of like when you see a gal (or for others a guy) that you like. You just know its for you.
Ask VandyMac, I think (s)he researched the schools better then I.

Steiner19er

I think SIU has been really slow with their whole process. I just got an acceptance call just the other day. I never even went on an interview either! It blows me away that they can choose their students without ever meeting them. I know a student at SIU now, who thinks the school is OK, but I'm still going to UIC. Even tough they are currently remodeling the building, I'm looking forward to seeing some of the finished results. My two dentists graduated from UIC a few years ago and of course they had very positive things to say. Also my mentor, an SIU grad, had very positive things to say about UIC. Its too bad that it isn't for you. I thought about going to IU, but the tuition is a killer being out-of-state! Its is a great school. Maybe I'll here of ya if you plan on coming back to Chicago to practice? Best of luck at IU!

i really don;t care for SIU. They just have the one dental clinic, so all students have to share the same operatories. Also Alton isn't happening. Its an old town, and its all alone. The Edwardsville campus is 30 minutes away. Thats a while to drive just to play basketball or go to the gym. They do have a good program, but half of their classes are in old houses. They don't have a formal interview. I visited their last year. They interviewer went thru my grades, and said they sucked, and my DAT reflected my bad grades (the whole thing lasted 10 minutes). UIC and SIU are both good schools. But I want to go where I feel I can do my best, and neither UIC or SIU fit the bill.

Stein19er,

Your right I did say that I was going to go to Nova I am very happy with my descion also. I just feel that I should always take every interview I get with an open mind. I just would like to see whats out there thats all. Good Luck!

understandable. not to mention braggin rights...i got into IU, its a great school. Tell me what you think when you get back. Oh, and ask if they got a dress code

UofM,
I was also wondering if Nova was still your first choice? Maybe you'll decide after the interview that you'll like IU. Steiner and I have talked about their interview day before, and I was not impressed when I went. It's very short, relatively uninformative, and not as professional as other schools I've visited. You probably won't be there for more than a couple hours!!

However, after reading his posts and talking with others, I realized that it may not usually be like that and the students are very happy with the school. Also, their board results are really high if you plan on specializing. Obviously their facilities are not as nice as Nova, but I would have to say that IU has a very respected and established dental program. It is, however, very expensive if you're out of state, which is the main reason for my concern. I would be very interested in hearing your interview experience to see what you thought of it as compared to Nova.

Good luck at the upcoming interview! It's very laid back and you'll probably be interviewed by 2 faculty members and 1 student at one sitting. If you could also ask a question for me I would really appreciate it. Can you find out how many of their students get accepted to specialty programs each year, on average? Thanks alot!

Well..I will be more than happy to post my feed back if I decide to go. My U of Michigan interview is this week so I will let you know how it compared to Nova. As far as IU how much is it for out of state? Yes I am considering a speciality career.

UofM,

From IU's bulletin, it's roughly $215,000 for tuition and housing for 4 years. I don't know about other schools, but it's kind of steep for a state school.

IU out of state Total Academic Year Tuition

Year 1: 41,002
Year 2: 38,851
Year 3: 33,323
Year 4: 32,653

Required Summer School Fees

Year 1: 988
Year 2: 1235
Year 3: 1482
Year 4: 494

Estimated Living Expenses for 12 months:

17,256 per year

That is pretty up there for a state school.

I'll be attending Indiana too! Steiner19er, looks like we'll be classmates! As for the price of out of state tuition, though I'm lucking enough to be paying in-state, it is pretty much just as steep as everywhere else out of state. Also in terms of the PBL, I have definitely heard mixed opinions from students. BUT in the long run, I know that IU's board scores have gone up because of it..so they must be doing something right. I have several friends that attend IU dent and have heard nothing but really positive things about the school. I do agree with Vandymac that the interview day is not as impressive at other schools, but the student feedback I got was more important and as I said before was really great! Anyway, see you in July!

lbyoung:
cool, i found another of my classmates. I have heard alot of good about IU. I think that in-state, or out of state it is worth the extra $$. The PBL doesn;t bother me, especially since the boards are partially PBL based. Thats probably why the scores are going up.
Since you have Dent freinds can you ask them if they got a dress code?
