Hey guys so Ive been accepted to both and have to decide by April 1st. LECOM is about 15k/year cheaper but Indiana is a much better school (or it seems so through some research on the internet). Also Im leaning more towards going to specialty afterwards but obviously no decisions made on that front until I actually go to DS. any help or insights will be greatly appreciated

LECOM.

FL>>>IN
Thanks for the replies.

Im curious of why you say that? I honestly couldnt care less where I live. Theres gonna be stuff to do no matter where you go so for me its really between money vs better school and if the price is "worth" paying or not.

Pick Indiana, you won't have enough time in the day to enjoy Florida

Do you want the word "osteopathic" in your degree?

go to indiana. personally, i've seen both schools and considered both of them at one point. yeah, lecom is in florida...but it's like in a pretty up and coming area of florida. indiana's area isn't much better either, but it's a more established school that offers more.

and if you really want to talk about serving 'underserved' populations, you definitely have that at indiana. it's the only dental school in the state, so there's a monopoly in that regard. with lecom, you're competing with 2 other dental schools. the idea of serving the 'underserved' comes from being outsourced to dental clinics in your last 2 years.

Thats the thing, I know Indiana is a better school but Do you think It's worth the extra 15k/year? If both were the same price I would've picked Indiana no problem.

hmm...that's a tough one.

is it 15k extra for tuition itself, or overall (including living expenses, etc.)?

the reason i ask this, is because if it includes room/board, etc. that number isn't always accurate...in fact it can be an overestimate. you can easily cut that cost down. i'm sure housing in indianapolis is cheaper than in bradenton/st petersburg florida.

if it's by tuition....then....15k a yearx 4 years=60k + interest. it would be wise to bite the bullet and go to the cheaper school, tbh. good luck.

I honestly would just go for a cheaper school.
You said you might go into specialty afterwards, so I would think getting out of DS with less debt would be a better idea.

i mean, one can be ambitious about specializing. everyone wants to be an orthodontist, or oms when school starts. go into the mindset that you'll come out as a general dentist when you graduate.

with that said, i would still say go to the cheaper school. keep in mind that you have to pay for some residencies, so the more you can save, the better off you'll be.

Indiana far superior to LECOM in terms of clinics, specializing, didactics and board pass rates.

60K is a writeoff when you own your practice(s)
