I'm a little confused on what PTCAS is asking us with this section. When entering coursework, are you supposed to only use the most intro class for each core pre-req? Like if I took an intro Biology of the Cell class and got a B (Bio 200), which would go under Biology 1. But for some schools, Microbiology (Bio 320) could go under Biology I as well, so could I not use Bio 200 as my Biology 1 core PT prereq and use Bio 320? But since Bio 320 is an upper division class, would I list it under Biology 2? Also, if I took 3 quarters of intro biology, (200,201,202) how would I distinguish which ones go under Biology 1 and Biology 2? I assumed my first two quarters would go under Biology 1 and the last quarter goes under Biology 2.

Can someone please clear this up for me? Thanks!

From the PTCAS website:

"If you have taken advanced courses in the same subject, only match the introductory or general course to the appropriate prerequisite. For instance, do not match advanced biology courses to "Biology I" .

For quarter-based courses, you may need to select more than 1 course per prerequisite.
  • 2 semesters sequence = 3 quarters sequence
  • Lab Course = 4 semester hours or 6 quarter hours;
  • Lecture Only Course = 3 semester hours or 4.5 quarter hours"

So all three quarters will be pre-requisites, and I don't think it matters which you place them under, as long as all three are marked as pre-reqs. The schools that will take Microbio over the intro bio courses will have to use this grade instead of the intro bio when they do their own pre-requisite GPA calculations.

So every one of my upper division biology courses would go under Biology 2? Because it says "Generally, you should match only one course to each core PT prerequisite." So would I just put one of my upper division biology class as Biology 2 and the rest of them as "None"?
And if I took two quarters of general chemistry, would the first quarter go under Chemistry 1 and the second quarter go under chemistry 2? Because I also took 3 quarters of organic chemistry, so I wasn't sure if I put the 2 quarters of gen chem in Chemistry 1 and the 3 quarters of organic chemistry in Chemistry 2.

No, so only your intro courses will go under Bio 1 and Bio 2. The same thing goes for all the pre-req courses, you shouldn't put advanced courses for the intro pre-reqs (so physics, chemistry, biology).

You should put all three quarters of your intro bio under Bio 1 and Bio 2, because 3 quarters = 2 semesters of intro bio. So first two go under Bio 1, and last quarter under Bio 2 (or first quarter under Bio 1 and last two quarters under Bio 2, I don't think it matters).

If your upper division grades are better, then the school should take this into account when they calculate the Pre-req gpa.

Okay I got it! Thanks for being patient with me! I understand it now. I appreciate your help very much!

No worries!
I think it's required because not every school will accept the upper divison as a pre-req, so it just makes it easier in the long run. If you're still confused about anything though, email/write a question on the PTCAS facebook page - They respond really quickly!

It also says to match "1" course for each listed in the Core in the instructions. I see folks talking about adding all of their respective classes for that category but really you should add only one class for each.

If you have retaken the same course to improve your grade, both need to be listed as core classes. I think that is what people are referring to.

My classes were all on the semester system, so you might be right. I made the assumption that you can list three quarters under 2 pre-reqs, but that might be wrong. I would post a question on the PTCAS Facebook page or call their Customer Service line just to double check.
