I haven't seen much discussion about ID fellowship applications, so I thought I'd start the annual thread and hopefully jumpstart the conversation.

dkpwalker,

you applied to 78 programs?? wow, wonders if that's too many. I only applied to 24 programs. Every day I'm thinking of adding more programs, but is it worth the money? I hope I made the right decision. No invites so far.

broadly

MDTE (MrDownToEarth) I am an IMG with visa issues so I have to apply broadly. Its always worth it if you match into a great program...I already got 1 interview.

Do you guys want to keep a running list of interview invites, so we know when programs start inviting? I got my first invite today (USC). We could keep a list like:

University of Southern California- Trekkie963 (12/15)

And add names as people hear back. I saw them doing it in another thread. So far it looks like just a few of us headed the ID route.

Friends,
New ID fellowship spot has opened up for the 2010 July 1 Start date. It is at Texas A & M University, Scott & White Hospital, Temple, Texas: Contact Gayle Douglas: 254-724-6195 or Barbara Culp: 254-724-7633. Email: [email protected]. Please contact if interested

Just keeping the list of interview invites going...

University of Mississippi - dkpwalker (12/15)
University of Southern California - Trekkie963 (12/15)
University of Washington - Trekkie963 (12/21)

Fumigatus, feel free to add yours on so we know what programs are inviting!

Has anyone heard from the Northeast (esp NY/NJ) programs yet? I applied to 23 programs and haven't heard from anyone.

Haven't heard anything from NY programs. DIdn't apply to NJ. Got interviews at OSU, UPitt, USC.

Georgetown is not participatin in Match

Got the email from them as well. Kind of irritating...I spent my money on them for nothing. Thanks Georgetown for letting us know in advance!

I feel better after I looked in other fellowship forums and look like it's quiet time across the board. I don't know why I tortured myself and checked my status probably >4 times a day...I can take a slow deep breath now.

Just heard from UCSD.

I'm getting nervous about a letter that still hasn't shown up in the EFDO post office (3 of 4 letters are there). Does anyone know if this will be a problem for programs that have application deadlines approaching? Any advice on how to handle it?

Most programs require 3 letters for completion so as long as you have 3 uploaded by the deadline you should be ok. I'm in a similar situation - had 3 letters in by December 15th but my 4th letter wasn't uploaded until 01/04. Yet even programs with deadlines listed as Dec 31st downloaded my 4th letter when it became available.

If program only needs 3 letters, why care about 4th letter?

After my third letter loaded this week, I got interviews at Duke, Ohio State, and Sloan-Kettering. Applied to 10 total.

Still no word from the New York programs. It must be a slow start to the season. :(

Applied to 27 programs. Finally got my LORs uploaded and starting to hear about interviews.

Oschner
Wake Forest
Brown

Vanderbilt-rejected (even prior to receiveing all of my letters of rec; that really stunk):(

Here's my list
JHU, University of Maryland, Pittsburgh, U Rochester,U Minnesota

What are generally considered some of the best places to train for ID? This could be in terms of outstanding teaching faculty, research opportunities, etc. I'll be applying in the next application cycle.

I can add a few more interviews to the mix.

No word from BID or MGH or NIH yet.

Yes, I deleted all the names from the list. Not sure we really need a running tally of who's interviewing where.

I like seeing where all people are applying and interviewing, but whatever people prefer.

Just heard from BIDMC via snail mail.

Based on posts so far. I also added a few more I have heard back from.

Keep updating. Even hearing a 'No' from programs is useful information as it lets us know that they are at least still going through the pile of applications.

It's gotten very quiet over the last week-10 days. I applied to roughly 30 programs. I heard from about 1/3 (interviews and rejects together in the 3 weeks since New Years. Since then, nothing. No interviews and no rejects. I assume most programs have given out the first wave of interviews and now wait to see how many people accept before offering round 2. I was under the assumption that I would hear something either way before this whole process is over from everywhere I applied. Is this true?

It is my hope as well. But why is it I have the feeling that many programs would just stay quiet when they reject you?

You think the inactivity has anything to do with residency match and rank lists being made on the program side? I know that a few of the ID guys at my residency pull double duty for medicine residency and fellowship applications.

Either way, I find it hard to believe that a program would not have the courtesy to give the applicant a final decision at some point. Some programs only get 40 applicants, this isn't the hundreds for residency. Maybe we'll all get a bunch of rejection emails on the last day of march or sometime in late spring. I start interviewing a week from today and have left travel plans open for some pending programs. At some point, I will not be able (money and time wise) to schedule further interviews. It's too bad there isn't a definitive date so that us applicants can move on with our lives.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. At this stage of our careers and given the time as well as money we have spent I too feel we all deserve an answer to our application.

I hope that we will start hearing from more programs soon.

Until then I am wishing all of you the best of luck!

Hey Guys:

Is it customary for a PD to call you up at 7pm at night asking if he/she could schedule a time to discuss their program with you on the phone? I found this very strange and feel like they just want to pre-interview you before deciding if they should invite you for a formal interview. This program only takes 1 fellow per year.

Heard from Baylor, Hopkins and Harbor-UCLA in the last couple weeks.

Still waiting on 40% of my applications.

The list of invites has gotten quite extensive, but there are still some big programs that haven't come up at all (and several more that I am personally still waiting on :xf:).

People should be starting to interview now, so it would be great to hear some impressions from the interview trail. I'll try to post something myself after I visit a couple programs this coming week. Thanks to everyone who has been contributing to this thread!

I have been making some phone calls to the last few programs that I haven't heard from. Duke said that they have sent out all of their invitations. Most of the other programs are still reviewing applications and will be sending out their decisions soon. Still others I have left messages with and sent e-mails and have received no response. Wish I had a better idea about when the latest was to hear back from programs.

Hope everyone is having good luck with their interviews......

Same here. I have about 15 programs left that I have heard nothing from. It probably doesn't matter at this point, other than formality. I got 1 rejection in the last 2 weeks and no other correspondence. Any IVs going forward will probably be for a random Tuesday that I couldn't make anyway. I really wish Eras would give back the money for each program that doesn't even acknowledge that they read my app.

Thanks for sharing some definitive information about Duke. That was on my list of programs I hadn't heard from. Some programs that are noticeably absent from our invite list include UCSF, UCLA, UNC and Colorado. I e-mailed UCSF almost a month ago to check in but never got a response.
