Hello !
I am a french resident in the specialty of Public Health and I am at the end of my MSc of Epidemiology at the LSHTM (although I really enjoyed my MSc, I would like to go somewhere else for my PhD). I am currently wondering about where would/could I do my PhD in Epidemiology (with special interest in infectious diseases)? A friend of mine working in Health Policy suggested that the US could be a good choice.
So I have been searching for a couple of days some kind of ranking of American universities PhD programs in Epidemiology in infectious diseases with basic information on each of them, and a comparison (why not?)….I have not been really successful….
Of course Hopkins and Harvard are quite famous for their expertise in this topic, but I still do not have any idea of the main differences in their program. And are there other univerisities with comparable expertise? And what are the differcences?
Another question is: do you think I may have a competitive enough profile to apply there?
The question of the funding is still a mystery for me in the US so I won’t even try to ask yet.
Thank you if anybody can help me a little! 🙂

Best place to start is by looking at faculty lists and see what kinds of publications these people have published. That will be a good indication of the strength of a school's research portfolio in specific areas.

Thank you for your answers ! One of the reasons, the US interested me was the feeling that I would get more opportunities after the PhD. I am pretty surprised!
I met somebody who was lucky enough to make her PhD in Hopkins (probably not the most representative, I know....), and she suggested that it was a real chance in terms of opportunities to meet and start working in research teams or simply getting involved in different programs. But she was a bit elusive on the specific topics of interest except vaccinology.
Maybe I was a bit too fast to think of another university...
But do you know other US university other than Harvard and Hopkins with a high quality academic work?

Perhaps I am a bit biased since I am matriculating into this institution, however I would suggest you take a look at Emory University's PhD program in epidemiology. It has quite a comprehensive department in epidemiology and is literally across the street from the CDC, meaning that you would have ample research opportunities working in some of the best research facilities in the United States. Emory's program is a top-ten ranked public health school (currently ranked 6th behind Columbia) and has about 6-10 PhD slots open per a year. With a degree from LSHTM, I feel that you could be quite a competitive applicant. With acceptance you get full tuition plus stipend. It's just an avenue you might want to look into.
