I am wondering if any id specialists only work in an inpatient setting? Is this even possible or will you have to do some outpatient work as well.

I shadowed an ID doc who was the chair of ID at the hospital where I was a nurse assistant. He only had office hours on Friday and did rounds at hospitals other days of the week.

Hope that helps.

Most ID docs will have at least a weekly half-day or two of clinic in which they do some travel medicine, follow-up hospital consults (e.g. on week 6 of home IV Abx for osteo/endocarditis), see a few consults for FUO in outpatients, etc

If you choose to do HIV medicine you could spend most/all of your time in the outpatient setting
