Can anyone shed a little light on how rejections go down?

Do schools tend to send out a set of rejections right away, then keep a pool of somewhat competitive people around to insert into various interview dates (who might be rejected later if no spots are available)? Or do they just wait until the end of the entire process when their classes are finalized and then send out a giant batch of rejections? I really have no clue how this all works.

it usually depends on if the schools do rolling admissions or hard deadlines. with rolling admissions I believe you either get an interview or rejection, then if you go to the interview you either get a waitlist acceptance or rejection. this can happen at any time after you submit your app because the committee goes through them as they come in. if there's no rolling admissions then the school takes all the apps turned in before the deadline and does an initial filter for gpa, gre, whatever they look for the most. then they offer interviews and from there it's the same as rolling admissions; waitlist, acceptance or rejection. of course i may be wrong with some of the specifics but this is how I understand it.

The longer you go without hearing from the school, the more likely it is that they rejected you. Silence speaks volumes, so to speak. Schools usually accept applicants before they reject applicants. Most of the time they'll send a small letter in an envelope or an e-mail.

Thanks for the candid answer. I guess it's not the answer I was hoping to hear seeing as I haven't heard from a majority of the schools I applied to yet, however, I like to keep myself firmly planted in reality. Was it your experience that a lot of schools gave a reply before Christmas? I'm failing miserably at keeping my mind off of all this pressure and studying for finals. 🙄

Take it one step at a time and get through your finals. I have only heard back from 2 out of the 7 schools I applied to. After your finals are over if you still have yet to hear back I'd try calling a few of them. I expected to hear from a lot of schools in December and when I called I was told January was more likely. So keep your head up

Thanks for that info. I've also only heard from 2 schools. That was an encouraging thing to read on this gloomy, stressful Sunday.

Don't be to gloomy yet if you are still finishing pre-reqs. A lot of schools are waiting for your fall semester grades before they contact you.

Depending on the programs that you've applied to, it's still pretty early in the process. There are quite a few schools that do not conduct interviews until late Jan, Feb and even into March. I'm not sure how much notice they give but I would guess about 3 - 4 weeks.
