When are acceptances given out? Are they on a rolling basis? Thanks 😉

The committee meets sometime after the deadline and the acceptances go out early April I believe. And it's not on a rolling basis (which would be nice).

Also, if you don't hear that you have been accepted when the acceptances go out--they do have a short wait-list. Last year, many people were accepted off of the waitlist (including one of my roommates). So, it's not over if you don't hear back at first.

if my ugpa and sgpa are <3.0.. mcat is 27.. what are the chances i would get in?

ive applied to all the urm based post baccs.. but there are so few spots i need more options..and im a tx resident..

would it be detrimental if the most recent scientific discovery i am interested in is about space? or should i find something medical?

In my opinion... I would say find something medical--since the aim of the essay is to impress upon the admissions committee your interest in medicine and becoming a doctor.

If an applicant is put on the waitlist--they give you information about when you will find out about getting in. Yes, they will let you know if you are on the waitlist--they will e-mail you. Also, you should find out about getting in off of the waitlist in enough time to make arrangements.

The 27 MCAT is helpful... Could you PM me with your specifics? I could help you a lot more that way.

But, generally, I can tell you they will look at your last 60 hours of undergrad coursework to see if you have an upward GPA trend... If you have a significant reason as to why a portion of your undergraduate coursework did not go well--I would try to explain that as well if possible.

How competitive is this program? I have ~3.4gpa ~3.3sgpa (~3.9 in last 60 hours), and a 32 Mcat. I plan on applying to DO schools the same cycle, but I'd like to apply to this program as well in case I don't get any acceptances.

I saw the application on the website through the GSBS and I had some questions. I notice there isn't any place in the application to list ECs or volunteering, is this not included? Is there an interview for this program, or do I just submit online and hope for an acceptance?

I am reasonably confident that I can get a DO acceptance somewhere, but I would love to stay in Texas, so I'm really interested in this program.

Thank you

How did you guys send in the MCAT scores? When I went to the aamcas website, I didn't see this school as an option for score release.

You can print out an official report from MCAT/AAMC and mail it to them along with materials for your application.

@Mac13 Dude You have a 32 MCAT. Apply to MedSchool in Texas. Go ahead an apply to the MedSci program, there isn't a place for volunteer hours because they use the personal statment get a good feel for your personality. There is also a reason it is very similar to the TMDSAS statement, that way you have one written. Apply to TMDSAS, and submit before May is out. P.S. MedSci is taking 150 students next year. That's huge, and will be competitive.

That's a little concerning, isn't the MS1 class only like 200 students? That doesn't seem like that leaves very good odds for matriculating via the "linkage." Are classes graded on a curve? I've heard some conflicting things about the matriculating requirements of the program. Some say a 3.5 only gets you an interview, some say a 3.8 is guaranteed acceptance, and others say there is no guaranteed acceptance even if you manage a 4.0.

I'll probably apply TMDSAS as well, though I'm not confident I'll get any acceptances, I understand that you have to in order to transition into TCOM anyways.

Anyways, I really appreciate the response Tirgwyn, thank you.

😕 Are there any OOS students who completed the Medical Sci master and became a Texas resident? Do you become a Texas resident after living in TX for a year (by the time you enroll in a medical school or by the time you apply)?

Thanks 🙂

I think if you get a job (you could probably work on campus a few hours a week) for a year--you will be able to become a Texas resident the fastest without having to own property.... not sure, definitely something to look into though. Those who are OOS in the program now are not considered in-state just for living here while in the program... You have to actually own property, etc. But if you work for a year, I think you will file federal taxes with a Texas occupation--thus making you a resident??? Not sure--just throwing that out there. My roommate is planning to do something like this... I'll see if I can get more info from her.

Thank you, if you you could get more info from your roommate that would be great. I'm worried about being considered OOS and not having the same opportunity to get accepted to medical school since the schools give priority to in-state applicants. I'm a Florida resident 😛

Q. How do I establish residency?
A. One must be an independent (not claimed as a dependent for income tax purposes), US citizen or permanent resident, (have a green card, also known as card I-551 or the evidence of I-551 stamp in the passport) or international student who is eligible to establish a domicile in Texas and live in the state of Texas for 12 consecutive months and establish a domicile in Texas prior to enrollment.

Q. How do I establish a domicile in Texas?
A. A domicile in Texas is presumed if, at least 12 months prior to the census date of the semester in which he or she is to enroll, at least one of the following applies: 1) the person owns real property in Texas, 2) the person owns a business in Texas, 3) the person is married to someone who has established a domicile in Texas, 4) the person has had gainful employment other than work-study and other such student employment in Texas.

Thanks a lot!! I'm married and my husband and I would like to move to Texas because there is a better supply of jobs in his field there than in FL and because of my studies...so..based on the information I might be able to establish residency based on point #3 and I might be able to find a part-time job...by the time of enrollment I would have lived in TX for 12 months...My only concern is that in the TMDAS website they say they establish your residency status at the time of application and that it's up to the school's discretion to update your residency classification before enrollment. Once the medical schools review my application they may consider me OOS even though I will become a resident by the time med school starts??

That is a bigger concern for the administrators of this program. That being said you are cometing with more people but you still have the ability to apply to the OOS DO schools as well, with the added program completion from UNT-HSC, and TAMU loves the students from this program.
As far as interviews go. Everyone who is in the program and applies to TCOM while in the program is Garunteed an Interview. A 3.8 doesn't garantee you acceptance but, it really helps. There is no cut off for acceptance out of this program, but TCOM says that it has been their experience that people who didn't have a 3.5 and got in had a very difficult time in Medical School. I'm not at a 3.5 yet but I'm trying to prove that I can do it. With the program they are really looking for an "Upward climb in your grades."
Curve: There is a Curve in the Core Classes, those are the 8am classes. This Curve is to an 85. They will curve the whole class up until the average is an 85, however if the average already is an 85 or higher than no curve.

If you don't get an acceptance the first time apply again. Sometimes its really to see if you really want it.

I keep hearing from people that you have a better chance of getting in if either the MCAT or the GPA is low. If both are good, then your chances decrease.

I wanted to know if this is true since that's not the typical thing for grad schools. I have a 3.59 GPA and a 29 MCAT. I'm fine with both grades, but I feel like they are both on the average side. Not really too sure on what my chances are of getting in to this program.

Hey, I PM'd you with more info. You are a great candidate. Very similar to my stats going in.

Hi everyone! I'm new to SDN and have been trying to read as many threads so I wouldn't repeat the same questions.

My MCAT is 22R, and my GPA is 3.0. I graduated 5 years ago and have been teaching science ever since. Now I decided to go back to the original plan (med school) and this program seemed like the perfect route. I have applied and now I am patiently waiting to find out if I got in. What are my chances? I am not sure what an "average" applicant's stats are...

My big question is regarding the MCAT. I know I need to get my score up, but should I be studying now for the April MCAT, so I can take it before the program and completely focus on my classes once I start it (given that I get accepted), or should I wait for the summer MCAT class and study then... or both?

Also, in one of the threads I read about the possiblity of TCOM offering the MD route soon. How soon? Is that in the discussion phase or it's for sure that it will happen?

Thanks!

From what I have read, it is better to take the MCAT before the summer classes start...there's a Biostats class that seems to be difficult and time consuming so I guess you won't have a lot of time to study for the MCAT. I am planning on retaking the MCAT on April or early May...if I get accepted to this program so I can focus on my classes. I too read about TCOM offering MD..but I guess it is on the dicussion phase and if approved (from what I read) it would take about 3 to 5 years to open 😴

Ya. I also heard that UNT is opening an MD campus, but the first class would be 2013 at the earliest if it all gets approved. I read it in a dallas/ft. worth newspaper...I'll try to find it and post the link

How recent does the scientific discovery have to be for the second essay? I already read up on one discovery and want to write about it. It's from 2008, and I would consider this recent.

I think anything within the last year would be considered recent. If you're looking up something from '08 I'd check into any updates or additional research done on that discovery within the last year and include them in your write-up.

Has anyone gotten their EUID in an email yet? I haven't and I'm anxious to find out if my app is complete (I called, they said it hasn't been processed yet). I'm pretty sure I didn't forget to mail anything out but juuust in case... what happens if I did forget something or I sent it but it didn't get there and they notify me after March 12? Will they give me time to re-send it?
3 more weeks until we find out who got in... ugh... hate the wait!

I haven't gotten anything from the medical master program about an EUID number. But if you have applied for their DO school for Fall 2010 then you can use that ID number to check. Or you can call the office if it a big concern for u...

I received an e-mail today with my EIUD number. My check was cashed yesterday. 🙄

so tell me everything you did to make sure all your stuff was in -- that they had all your stuff and your application was set

Mine got cashed yesterday and still haven't received anything yet... Should I call or wait? I'm worried that they might be missing something..... (I know... I am being paranoid... but just want to be sure...) *SIGH*

I called the office and also used my EUID to check online

thanks I'm nervous about this whole thing. Still wondering if I took the right track on personal statement etc.
What approach did you all take on personal statement

I talked about my professional goals and my views on medicine. why I wanted to do medicine. and how the program would help me. but from what i hear they look at your overall application so all the weight won't necessarily be on your statement (if that makes you feel a little better).

Do we find out early April...like the first week...or around the second week...I hate this wait...+pity+

@readdoc; about the personal statement approach
I had no previous hospital or research experience, I am non-trad career changer so I spoke of experiences along the way that helped shape my passion for the field, and then I explained how in the end I decided to chase the dream and how this program would help me get there. I tried to be as transparent and honest as possible, let them see my personality, my passions, my motives, and hope they believe it 🙂

@Tortue: I called to ask the same thing (they may start screening calls because of me soon haha) and they said the acceptance letters usually go out around the second week of April. So yeah, 4 more weeks of torture!!!!!

4 more weeks!! 😱 and they are going to send out letters!! I'm out of state and if I get accepted I need time to look for a place where to live if I decide to attend this program...When do classes start? 😕

Classes start the 24th of may. But orientation is around the 21st.

You don't have to wait for the letter, because with your EUID you can just keep checking your status online, and it'll tell you as soon as your it changes. (I haven't gotten my EUID yet grrrr)
Last year about 30 people were wait-listed around mid-April and many didn't find out if they got in until the end of April. I would assume we're on a similar timeline this year. I think I saw on their website that the classes are scheduled to start May 25th. So, worst case scenario - you'll have about 4 weeks.

That's right..I forgot about the website hehe I was fricking out a little 😳. Thanks for the info texasgal and ippie. If we don't take the MCAT before classes start when do we take it..in August?, so their Princeton class lasts 2 months or so? Are you planning on taking it before classes start? I was thinking about it but I'm afraid :scared: of the MCAT :barf:

On my last two tries I got 22R and 22Q. The physical sciences are kicking my a** (got a 6 there!)! I just don't remember that stuff and the more I review it the more I hate it, and the more I hate it the less I retain...
So yeah... I've been asking for MCAT advice all over the place and everyone so far says: RETAKE IT BEFORE THE PROGRAM STARTS... and if you score below 28 then you should retake it while in the program. I want to avoid taking the MCAT class during the summer semester because of the tight finances and because the biostats class apparently is a monster... and I really really really want to do good in this program, so... MCAT it is! I kinda started studying, planning to take the last one they offer before the classes start. I'll be applying to TCOM this summer even if I don't get in the MedSci postbac... it's worth a try...

I'm confused here...we have to pay for the class out of pocket? or is it added to the curriculum and it's included w/the tuition for the summer? how does it work? 😕
I took a princeton class in the summer of 09 and I'm retaking it now (free b/c of their guaranteed thing). Thanks

I think they add it to your tuition. It's a princeton review course too though!

Thanks!! ..I hope that if I have to take the class again, my instructors are better than the owns I have at this time. :xf:

My understanding is that your summer tuition would be somewhat lower if you were to skip the MCAT prep.

Yes, I would think so too. When are you planning on taking the MCAT? I'm scheduled for 05/01 :scared:
