Inside of ER Lumen resembles what...

ok this is a serious question...nothing dirty 😉

So i'm working thru the TPR sci workbook...and passage 2 number 7 says...The ER lumen corresponds most closely to which of the following compartments....and the answer says...interior of the golgi, interior of the secretory vesicle...and the extracellular compartment, in turn.

What does that mean? How do you know? I thought it was the cytoplasm since the ER has a cell membrane.

all membrane-bound organelles have membranes (surprise surprise lol). What were all the options? At this point I'd say interior of golgi since both the interior of the ER and interior of golgi deal with protein packaging/processing. However, I'm not really sure until I see the other answer choices. I'm fairly sure it's not secretory vesicle though.
 
other choices were:

interior or nucleus
cytoplasm
extracell environment
intermembrane space in mitochondria

The book reasoned the interior of golgi or vesicle or extracell space...since only the extracell environ was a choice, C is the answer

that's a pretty weird question. I would not say cytoplasm since the reason the ER (and any organelle, for that matter) exists is to sequester its contents away from the rest of the cytoplasmic material, so scratch that. Nucleus/Mitochondria are specific to the functions they were created to carry out, so it wouldn't make sense for them to be similar to the ER. I guess extracellular environ. is similar to ER lumen because it is rich in proteins. When I think of ER lumen I think of protein processing/packaging. I don't know... I might be missing a key characteristic it possesses. I guess you just have to solve this by process of elimination though.

Can you post the exact wording of the problem and the answer key? That way I can give you a better answer.

My reasoning is pretty much the same what Green Pirate is saying...
 
The answer is "extracellular environment." Think about it - if a protein enters the secretory pathway and is in the ER lumen, where does it ultimately end up? If it is on the ER membrane and goes through the secretory pathway, the portion that is in the lumen ends up on the extracellular side of the plasma membrane, and if it is not a membrane protein, it ends up being secreted into the extracellular environment.
