I am starting PD1 this fall. I wasn't planning on working in a pharmacy until I see how my class load is going to be, meanwhile I hear that it is better to start early on getting some hands on experience. Any feedback based on what worked better for you.
Also, would my work before starting PD1 counts toward intern hours.
Thank you.

What is PD1? Did you mean P1 year??? As for intern hours - it depends on your state. Do you hold an intern license now? If yes, are you reporting it to the board of pharmacy? If yes as well, then yes - your hours are counting.

Working in a pharmacy will give you excellent experience. In just two weeks in the retail setting for my summer rotation, I have learned a ridiculous amount of OTC information - stuff that I hadn't been exposed to in the hospital setting...

You have to contact your state's pharmacy board (or go to their website) to find out what their terms and conditions are. I don't think the hours during the school year counts unless your school and state allows for it. I just finished my community pharmacy internship that was 200 hours long. You have to complete the hours consecutively (day after day), and have to be at the pharmacy 5 days a week. Some schools complete their community pharmacy internship one day a week, during their school year. Anyway, there's a new internship I have to do next year (patient assessment), and I can complete that one during the year. Not a lot of info on that one yet, except it's going to be in a hospital. I can't wait!

Whether or not you work during the school year is up to you. Personally, it works best for me to not work. During the school year, I give my time to a lot of volunteer activities that don't require a regular time commitment. So I'm still gaining some relevant experience and contributing something to the profession, but I don't need to worry about keeping a boss satisfied.

For me, summer is the time to work. I have the luxury of loving my job without school to mess that up.

I really appreciate your reply.
I was getting a bit freaked out when i hear that P1's are already working 🙂.
Volunteering seems a great idea to me. Could you please ellaborate on your volunteering activities if related to pharmacy? If you don't mind.
thx again.
