can anyone tell me how 'easy' it is to get an intern position in NZ, specifically in auckland? I'm a kiwi (from Auckland), but I'm studying med in Australia and am looking to return to NZ after graduation (end of 2007)

what are my chances? and how would I go about this process?

You need to apply through ACE Match programme:

I'm not too sure of your chances but if you want to work in Auckland, the order of popularity seems to be:
1. Auckland
2. Middlemore
3. North Shore/Waitakere (Waitemata District Health Board)

Good luck... I guess you'll be competing with me!

If you want to be only in Auckland it will be pretty competitive and the ranking is very impersonal and formalised. However if you are flexible and happy to do your first year in a North Island regional hospital you have a good chance. If you visit, make sure the RMO co-ordinator knows who you are, and try and do an elective there if its viable and write a personalised (to the hospital and region) letter of support - you are almost certain to get a job.
Once you have done a year in a regional hospital you should walk into a second year job in Auckland.

No visit, no elective, no personalised letter = likely low ranking.

what about a canadian studying in australia trying to get an intern year in NZ?!? Do I even have a chance of getting a regional position if I do an elective somewhere in NZ?!? Is the immigration the same as Australia (i.e. the 10-year moratorium thing?!?). Thanks so much for any help.

No 10-year moratorium.

Don't know much about other things. There are PLENTY of 2nd year HO positions available, but getting a 1st year position may be difficult.

I think chances of getting into regional hospitals in NZ without a PR/citizenship will be just as hard (or easy) as getting into regional/rural hospitals in Aus.

have to ask because of your comment: what exactly are the chances of getting a regional/rural internship as a non-resident in Aus? i realize people have done it in the recent past and that the coming student "tsunami" will reduce the likelihood. but i dont know how many were applying and actually getting intersnhips in aus as non-resident, whether in regional/rural areas or anywhere. sjkpark, are you at a an aussie school? you know non-locals who have gotten internships?

all comments welcome.

I'm at a NZ school.

Yes, I know non-locals who have gotten internships in NZ hospitals, some of them in major hospitals. But they are all NZ grads. They just don't have PR/citizenships. But I do also know non-locals who didn't get internships in NZ after graduating from NZ med school and went to Singapore or Aus.

Don't know anything about Aus, sorry.

NZ grad or NZ resident + Oz grad = highly possible to get NZ internship if you work at it.
Dont have either then forget it.
