Just trying to find out how many places I should apply for PGY-1

I am basically an average student. Middle of my class with a STEP 1 score slightly below the mean.

I am applying broadly to PM&R programs (~35 in total), and was just hoping to find out what would be a decent number of pgy1 years to apply to so that I don't have to scrammble (soap).

thanks

Apply broadly and look to interview and rank at lease 6-8 programs in my opinion. Same advice goes for PM&R programs.

so 6-8 for intern year and 6-8 for PM&R... are most students able to go on 16-20 interviews in one month?

12-16...

you will interview over the course of the interview season. I doubt most people get their interviews done in 1 month.

It will depend upon what type of prelim program (IM v. gsrg v. transitional) and location, some areas with with very competitive specialties requiring a PGY-1 will be harder to get an interview.

I would recommend applying to more rather than less, as all PGY-1 slots have been getting more competitive. It is better to turn down or cancel interviews than not have enough. I'm with fozzy in the rank 6-8 and you should be good.

The way I look at it, they consider a prelim medicine year and a transitional year each as separate "specialties" on the ERAS. Therefore when you submit, it's $85 flat rate for up to 10 programs. Might as well apply to 10 or as close to ten as possible for each and then be selective about interviewing, which will cost you more money.
