I'm trying to plan a month abroad during my last year of residency. Anyone have any suggestions. I've done a couple online searches, but would appreciate any input any of you may have regarding specific programs/countries espeically if they have an EM, EMS, Public Health, or tropical medicine focus

Thanks

I spent a year in Guatemala in med school and took aboiut 18 months to set it up. granted it took more time since I was going for a year, but my biggest advice is to start now. Especially if wanting to go to a 3rd world country-things can easily fall through.

For finding an experience-there are 1000's of small groups who go all over the world spreading good and or bad. Lots of them (good and Bad) are religious based, so you need to decide if that is for you or not. I worked with both and had good and bad experiences with them all.

Consider approaching your local rotary club for funding. Our local clubs helped immensely and were very excited to help. Plus it is a great way to meet local business and community leaders. They would probably want yoy to give a presentation once you got back.

a good website is mfinder.org. has literally hindreds of groups looking for people. sned me an email if you want any help.

NYU has an established rotation in Romania, Dr. Jagoda the program director at Mt. Sinai has strong ties to Italy, Chile, and Argentina.

You should probably check out their websites for their contact information.

Hey all

Thanks for the posts. I looked into the sites, all great. I talked to my PD, and he seems very supportive of changing my 3rd year schedule around if I can get the Yale/Johnson and Johnson Scholarship. Wish me luck, I guess I should get to work.
