Hello guys,

I am an international student without a greencard. This year I am applying to DO schools. I just graduated from U of Wisconsin with 3.73 overall gpa and 3.77 science gpa. My MCAT score was 29M (6/10/13M). I am planning to retake it on July 8th. I have 520 hrs of volunteer experience in a free hospital for homeless people. Also I will be publishing a paper this summer as a second author(at least I will submit it before I apply.) I know some schools accepts international students and annually, according to my source 15 students are accepted. What I would like to know is how hard it would be for international students to get in. I expect some disadvantages but want to know about the extent of this barrier more in detail from some other ppl's experience. Could anyone help? Thank you.

Actually 37 got in. Also, what nationality are you? That has an effect. If you are Canadian you are at a higher advantage than say a German because our educational system is well known to American admission panels

However, assuming you did your Undergrad at U of Wisconsin (and not grad etc), I dont think it really matters about the nationality. Im not sure how many schools you can apply to. I know that as a Canadian, I can apply to 19 schools. However, I do remember reading a few of them only accepted Canadians as "foreigns". I cant remember which schools off the top of my head though so look into it.

Its not as hard as you think as an Int'l student. Statistically for applicants vs acceptance, last year 37/402 applicants were accepted. Thats 9% i believe... which is around the same acceptance rate as Americans

Disadvantage: Cant apply to all 28 DO schools, hassle of transcript conversion (wont apply to u), long travel distance to interviews

Thank you drctother!

I am from Korea. I had 2 years of highschool education in U.S. prior to my attendance in U of Wisconsin. Thank you for the information. Also, where did you find this stats? Is there some booklet like MSAR for DO schools? Only info I got from my adivisor is a word file from a seminar. Thanks,

There is an MSAR for DO schools. My advisor had one years ago. The new MSAR book also has DO schools included in it...

Ya, there is an MSAR for DO schools called the CIB, its free on the AACOMAS website. http://www.aacom.org/resources/bookstore/cib/Pages/default.aspx

Thats the link. I keep trying to find out where I got the pdf from on the website that has all the stats.

Essentially its a pdf that has data of matriculants for 2009 where a lot of the info came from the MCAT people (AACA). It has everything broken down in all kinds of ways from "average GPA of Asians accepted, average GPA of Foreigners (anyone who doesnt have a US passport, so me)," etc for all races.

It does same thing for MCAT by race. It also does % of accepted by states. I could go on and on. It sucks cuz i dont know how to upload a pdf into SDN

I dont know why they do it by race, i think of think its racist in a way but at the end of the day its just data.

Oh ya you should be fine then! Do you have residency?

no I don't. pure international. haha

haha oh. I still think the fact that you went to a US school and all your transcripts are American...is a huge advantage. I wouldnt worry to much. I have to get my transcripts converted (which is stupid and a waste of time) because unless a Canadian transcript is 4.0 scale, it needs conversion despite letter grades and %.

I would say your golden, isnt your school a middle to high tier school? I thought I read that somewhere

thank you guys,

mspeedwagon, it has never been easy for me. so I knew it would be difficult. however, when I called two schools, they said they would not discriminate just because I am an international student. I have long way to go but I am glad that I have some chance. 🙂

I was an international student for the longest time (have a green card now) and everything was just that much harder so I know how it goes. You'll do fine though. Don't sweat it.

mspeedwagon,

would you mind sharing what country you are from? Just wondering if it was Canada (fingers crossed)

I just visited Canada (Toronto) for the first time last week... seems pretty nice. But, I'm NOT Canadian.

I'm a citizen of Tanzania.

mspeedwagon,

did you get in to DO school when you didn't have a green card?
I have an advisor through kaplan and she told me that once she helped one Tanzanian student get into a DO school. How did your admission go? thanks,

I haven't applied yet. I decided to hold off since I was close to getting my green card. I figured it would be much easier once I had it. I will be applying next year.

I'm surprised there was another Tanzanian student... there aren't many of us applying to MD/DO schools in the States.
