  1. Medical Student
I am an international student who want to go to medical school in US. Today, my advisor told me it's super-challenging. Originally, I know it's harder for an international student to get in a medical school. But according to the data, created by Duke U, there are some medical schools that do accept international students every year. So, does anybody know the possibilities for an international student to get in to medical school? Also, I attended undergraduate school in US. So, I receive similar education with you guys. I just wondered what makes the difference? Visa issue??? I am sooooooo frustrated now. 😕😕😕

The biggest issue for international students at MOST medical schools is money. Schools generally require admitted students to put X years' worth of tuition in an escrow account.

Additionally, there are typically fewer seats available to international students as a whole.

Does that mean if I can provide enough money, and I studied in US for bachelor degree, I would have similar chance with US citizens?

Yea, at some schools you can apply. You can only apply to certain schools, mostly private schools. Get a copy of the MSAR and check for schools that accept Internationals. PM me if you have any questions or doubts.

Thank you! I am a freshman now.... I will apply like 3 years later.

Data from AAMC: In 2010, of 1340 international applicants without a US state of residence (991 from Canada +349 all other) 14.9% matriculated to a US med school (86 Canadian + 105 all other), whereas 43.6% of total applicants did matriculate.

2010 Mean stats for Canadians matriculating at US schools in 2009: MCAT 33.4+/- 3.5, cGPA 3.74 +/- .22, BCPM GPA 3.75 +/-.23

2010 Mean stats for all other internationals who matriculated:
MCAT 33.0 +/- 4.2, cGPA 3.76 +/-.18, BCPM GPA 3.74 +/- .26

2010 Mean stats for all matriculants:
MCAT 31.1 +/- 4.1, cGPA 3.67 +/- .26, BCPM GPA 3.61 +/- .32

As a fellow international student who is doing undergrad in the US the above posters are correct. The issues are money and the number of schools which will let you even apply. I have done research (MSAR is very helpful) to find schools which I can apply to and there honestly aren't that many. Additionally even the ones which will look at your application sometimes give preference to US citizens. So even though these schools do look at you the same as an American student, the reason many advisors will tell you it is difficult is because many of the schools which accept international students tend to be private research based (i.e. top tier schools) and thus have higher stats. Also you can't get any federal aid which means most likely you or your family will be paying most of the cost. With that being said it is possible. I have cousins and know of people who have done it. It just requires hard work and unless you get some sort of scholarship money. I know it is frustrating, I have felt like giving up many times, but it's not impossible.

I'm an international student that was accepted to some American medical schools. I found that some schools give scholarships to internationals, but some schools actually claim that internationals are not eligible for any financial aid and they have to deposit the amount in an escrow account. Finally, Harvard and Yale give need-based financial aid to internationals.

I am also an international student who is in medical school now. It is challenging but its not impossible if you work hard at it. Don;t let anyone discourage you. I felt discouraged all the time, but ultimately got accepted into 5 schools.

I think having a high GPA, doing research with a good advisor, and having an extracurricular activity which you are passionate about and can write a great personal statement about it really important! atleast i think that's what got me in....

Yes, and I am at a school that provides need-based loans. Although the interest is quite high, it'll be worth it 🙂

good luck!

If you're a Canadian, you can obtain a $200k line of credit at prime interest from one of the six major banks in order to help pay for med school in the US. However, in most instances you need a co-signer so the bank isn't responsible for the debt you have accumulated in the case that you can't pay it off for whatever reason.

OMG. I am going crazy as well! I am almost done my bachelors in biochem from Canada. I am confused about where to apply in US because its nearly impossible for international students to get into Canadian medical school.

I neeeeed information! How did you manage that? Congratulations.
Where did you apply?

Hello.. I m an international student. Right now I m in Nassau Community College .. I will transfer next sem to Stony Brook University for bachelors in Biology. I m planning to apply for med school in 2014. I m on right track? ...

Well how many international students get in a medical school in your country then?

Hi I am currently a premed international student. I am curious as to which five schools you were accepted to and which one you are currently enrolled in. Do you mind sharing your MCAT score as well?

1. Money
2. Private med school is a better chance
3. Be exceptional at your undergrad
4. It's preferable if you can marry a citizen before applying (just kidding)

This this were earlier than 2011, I'd recommend a Caribbean school to you.

As it is...
