Does anyone know how many airline miles one needs to score a free international flight? I have about 40,000 on American and want to go to Africa. Any tips on when is the cheapest time to go to Kenya?

I think it differs with each airline, but I think 40,000 will get me a domestic, continental flight with Northwest Airlines. Hope that helps.

I am looking for flights right now and I noticed that for Northwestern a flight across the continent was 35,000. Each airline may be very different so I would check in with them.

It should Run you 75,000 miles for an economy ticket. AA doesn't fly to Africa, so you will have to use one of their OneWorld partners (Iberia, Swiss, TAM, El Al, etc.)

I flew to Tanzania on Northwest/KLM. For them, you need about 90,000 miles for a flight from the U.S. to Africa. For cheapest flights, try a number of different airports to depart and arrive; usually going from New York is cheapest, and sometimes going to the Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam airports are cheaper than flying into Nairobi, though you'd have to take a long bus ride to get from Dar to Nairobi...PM me if you want more info on travel in Africa!

Just don't travel during X-mas! The influx of European vacationers escaping winter sends traveling and accomodation costs skyrocketing! Plus, the hotels along the coast are booked solid months in advance for the Christmas break.

Check out Lonely Planet Thorn Tree Forums . All the info you need on planning a trip on a budget.

If Kenya doesn't work out, I can recommend Namibia as being absolutely fabulous and one of the worlds most beautiful places.

Kenya is on my list because a friend works there and has invited me to visit her in the clinic she works in. As for Namibia, it has been on my list for a while--I've heard there are amazing sand dunes and sunsets and also animals exclusive to that country. What's the appeal for you?

Someone else mentioned this, but in looking at their website it appears that American Airlines does go to Africa.

Thanks for all the recommendations!
